Cylinder Problems

Post by RedRanger »

I'm trying to make a metal ladder consisting of metal bars. I make the whole thing out of cylinders and put a metal bar texture on it. It looks fine in the editor but when I go into the game, the cylinders are flat and disappear at certain angles! Help!

That's because either:

A. The ladder brush is overlapping or too close to them

B. the ladder is configured wrong. Try doing this. Remove the ldder brush, and see if the 'real ladder' looks right then. Then expierement by moving the pink ladder brush further back, Make sure your angle is right too.

Are you using curve-cylinders? Then, maybe your problem is that the game-engine tries to reduce its work in game and draws not enough of these very thin steps...

Use normal brushes (in my opinion three-sided cylinders are good enough)!

No, the engine would not eliminate them to the point where they 'disappear'. I think I know what his prob is, his ladder is either configed wrong, or too close.

I had a go at making a railing a while back with cylinders and bits of the sides disappeared like you say. It only happens with very thin cylinders though so best to stick to normal brushes.

I figured out what was wrong. I was apparantely using a metal bar texture that was for a flat brush, like if you'd have a bar along a wall that didn't need to be 3D. So I switched to a normal brush and it worked!

I can't remember the exact value where cylanders work, but frankly, they SUCK in implementation, especially when they are 16 or less units in either the x, y, or z.

I took all my cylanders out aside from bent ones that were reasonably thick of all my designs... This engine just doesn't render them at all beyond a certain point.
