I basically share your views, but as long as these translators are used as a last resort only, I'm fine with them.
Personally, I like the Google translator a lot, it's definitely the best one out there and it's already made life easier for me a few times. For example, I had to read something on a French website a while ago. I did study French for 2 years, but the teacher was pretty bad and I never got it to a communicative level. I would be missing some very valuable information from that website hadn't Google translated it for me to English (my native language is Polish).
How could such a thing work? You have a field to type a message in and next to it a combo box to choose the language to translate to. Click "send" and before the text is "rcon say"d, the program retrieves a translation. As simple as that.
