wth!? i'm going to kick some radiant ass!

Post by p3n »

hey guys, i've very disappointed in radiant at the current moment, it all began when i was at the museum of arts here in san antonio, tx yesterday. just looking around the building i was thinking, wow, this would be a bad ass map. [no i'm not demented and no i'm not going to go shoot up a museum] either way, so i get home, open radiant, start making a quick layout of about half the 1st and 2nd floors of the museum as i could remember since it was fresh in my memory. so i work and work, trying to get as much done as possible so i don't forget what it looked like . overall, spending about 3 hours on the map so far. then everything changed, it seemed that every time i compiled, my map was missing my new modifications, and it was really starting to piss me off, so i moved my map files to a temp folder, compiled the map w/ mbuilder and used pauses [i usually don't pay much attention to mbuilder while it's compiling, just skimming over for basic errors] well it appears the .map was throwing an error on line 264 [not that it matters], but yeah, so i reload the .map in radiant, and there's my problem, the .map that radiant had been saving had maybe a total of 4 brushes remaining out of my total of over 500 ;( so i've abandoned my museum map, and i'm now looking for a new map editor. anyway, all i had put in the map so far [as far as spawn points] was a playerstart. so it's not mp at all, but if you want to see what the map may have looked like i've uploaded the remains of the .bsp and .vis to a .pk3 at my angelfire page.

this really blows, i'm so pissed off right now, i just hate spending time doing something that doesn't ever get finished. ;(

sorry for the rant... [p3n]

that sucks man! The only big problem I've had with radiant is with the 'autosave' option. I had this option turned on and when I was messing around with my map I decided to delete a large part of the map just to see what it would look like. It wasn't my intention to save the map but then the darn thing did an autosave. Yep, I was pretty pissed when that happened.

Have you checked the folder where you keep your .map files for a .bak file?

"...it seemed that every time i compiled, my map was missing my new modifications..." It looks like mbuilder didn't update the .map file, at least not in the right place. Have you checked all your folders?

yeah, i tried to rename the .bak and load it, it was identical to the .map. i also working on the .map and .bak for more than an hour trying to fix the saved file [the error said expect "(" on line 264] i mean it's weird because everything was there, it just couldn't load it because of that error in the .map. oh well, i've got better ideas for maps anyway, i'm just pissed off because i spent 3 hours on it.

Load your .map file into a text editor and look at line 264. It may be you can add the paren and fix it.

If the file from that point is not mangled, you could just delete that brush in the text editor.

Were you using any complex brushes, they would cause that kind of error.

I only mentioned this because I noticed it once when building some test maps. Radiant will happily let you create odd brushes, then save the file. But when you try and re-open the file, radiant can't understand what the brush should look like so it ignores it.
