Degenerate/duplicate plane

Post by Sgt.Stafford »

Does anyone know about duplicate/degenerate planes. I get this problem when I compile. It usually refers to prisms/triangles. Can somebody explain what it means so i can fix it.

A duplicate plane usually happens when you drag two edges (blue dots) over each other. This creates two faces on the same location.

A degenerate plane is often caused by vertex editing.

Something I found out about degenerate planes:
  • This seem to be brushes that have (because of e.g. vertex manipulation) coordinates with decimal places (?, like 12.345). This doesn't work and is therefore an error!
  • You can try to delete them by finding and deleting the brush(es), the compiler tells the numer of it.
  • Sometimes, you will tell MOHR to find 'entity 0/brush XX' which produced the error but there is nothing selected afterwards and you won't be able to delete this brush.
  • BobsToolz have helped me in this task, but it also couldn't delete one last degenerate brush.
  • But you also can open your map-file in Wordpad and delete the brush manually.

Vertex coordinates can safely have at least 6 decimals :?.

Depending on the -snapdistance setting of the compiler these will get snapped to the grid if very close to a grid point. Default is 0.1, thus, a vertex with coords (0.95673 0.899999 5.78804) would be compiled as (1.000000 0.8999999 5.788040).

Cheers for the help, I now know how not to make brushes.....lol

Only trouble is, finding some of the buggers. Find entity/brush displays some of the probs but a few of them dont show up, the 2D camera just points in the general direction......hmmmm?

You can often remove them by pressing backspace, even if you can't see them.

Otherwise, remove the brushes from the map file manually like Wacko said.
