How can I create a cliff/hill like in Omaha?

Post by Tempered »

Do I use a LOD Terrain or can I just use a brush? I've tried using EasyGen but it makes my maps load really slow and I can't reall move around in MOH radiant because the CPU is constantly going crazy.

Thanks

Yeah you use LOD terrain. ITs soooo conveniant and easy to use. Just make a big square any size of caulk. Then click LOD terrain and pick "create from brush." Then it will turn thin all by itself. Then hit "v" to bring out the vertex. YOu'll see all these purple dots. Just select which ever ones you want to move. I do it this way. First i will select all of the purple dots. Then i will go LOD terrain and click lock/unlock vertices. So now hit escape and all your dots will be green. That means they cant move. So what i do is select the green dots that i DO want to move by holding down the control button and left clicking each one ..one by one. AFter i found the ones i want to move then i go back to LOD terrain and once again select lock/unlock vertices. Then i move them up or down to create hills, trenches, holes, and bumpy roads. WHen youre all done just hit the "v" key again, and hit escape. The cool thing about using LOD terrain is if you make another piece you can snap it to the original peice of LOD to make one single piece...radient does it all for ya, its really cool makes maps look very realistic :!: :P

So what you are saying is in order for you to make trenches, you have to select certain vertices in a row (obviously) and drag them all down together to make the indentation in the land for the trench? What if your terrain isn't perfectly square and you have to make some cuts in the corners and make it match up to the bldgs. and such? I'm confused over how to make irregular patches of terrain. Haven't found any help in a tutorial on how to do this. And from what I've read, most people don't like Easygen because of the loading time and low fps. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The best way of making trenches is by pressing shift + f (facet editor) and select the triangles where you want your trench. Then click 'delete' and press 'ok' ('done' :? ). These triangles won't be drawn in game so you can make your trench there. You cannot make any other shapes with the terrain. This is a major letdown of the LOD terrain system. It's also very hard to align regular geometry (that is brush terrain) to terrain patches.

there is a limit to how high you can make the terain go I think it is 512 units within the same terain patch (if the some of the vertices turn yellow you are too high ) what you could do is make two terains raise one by selecting it and pressing the + key . then make a simple patch mesh flip it on its side ( you can't do that with terain ) and use it to match the upper and lower terain . simple patches can be stretched and bent . if the textures look funny after , choose natural on the surface menu (press s ) or that texture bar on the bottom if you have it visisble in the prefereces .

When you see yellow dots means your terrain has exceeded.
