The original maps use several layers, with some static models thrown in.

E.g. you might have some bushes at the front, then a small gap, then a larger treeline. Place some static bushes along these edges, making their scales bigger. Then place some trees (sparingly) in between the gaps. I find that placing static trees at the conors works well.

you could also use patch mesh. In this way the treeline would not be a straight line. You could put a slght bend in them.

In the Unterseitte map the maker used this:
He first applied a hedgerow texture around the area (1 set of brushes)
then applied the treeline texture behind that (2nd set of brushes)
threw in some full bush models, and oak tree models.

Thats pretty stand work.
Although I tend to stay way from using the oak tree model.
it will drop your frame rates.
Thats why the frame rates suck so bad outside that map.

yeah in the official maps the edges go off for 3 or 4 layers, an example is snowy park, where if you load it up in radiant you wil see that small parts of towns go on a ways past the walls and were made in great detail, as it all adds to the quality of the map

hands that moved quicker than sight. "You would die before the stroke fell."
