the upcoming death to the Quake 3 engine.

Post by Yarik »

With recent hype about the new upcoming Doom3 engine. I started to think about the future of Quake3 engine. The Q3 enging has been arounf for ages. It is surely by far the best engine as of now. Many cool games are based on the Q3 engine.
just to name a few
Q1
Q2
Q3
Medal of honor
BF1942
Wolfenstein
and many more. With the new engine we will have less things to do and faster compile time. I personally predict that if the engine is as good as they say then Q3 based games will com to a grinding Hault. We have seen Q3 as the best angine because there havent been any other engines that matched the quality of Q3 engine. We are in a state of ??? soon many dedicated mappers/scripters/modelers will start switching to the new engine i.e. doom3. People like Jv_map moh_rox and others like MPowell 1944 will be changing to the new engine. Sure it may not happen all of a sudden but more or less in a few years after the Doom3 engine release. This is going to be a bloody battle and the winner will be that who will satisfy the average gamers appetite for action. Well just have to wait and see for the Dust too settle :!:

Well if the Doom3 engine is as good as it is you will have a hard time trying to go back and map in Q3. You dont map in the wolfenstein 3D engine. so why would any one want to go back and start mapping in an engine that wont be as good as doom3?

a few things: Q1 & Q2 are not based on the Q3 engine. Q2 is based on Q1, and the Q3 engine is a very enhanced version of the Q2 engine. For DIII a new engine will be used.

Because of personal taste! I for one only want to design maps for a game I really really really like. A game I can play with others online and hopefully on my very own map. RTCW has better graphics than Mohaa but still I make map(s) for the latter. SpearHead uses a modified/better engine, but still many people stick to Mohaa. Why are some people I know still making maps for good 'ol Q2 or even Q1, instead of Q3? Q3 has been out for what, a good 4 years? Well they say they don't enjoy mapping for Q3 as much as they do for Q2. Simple as that. Still people are making levels for Halflife:CS. As long as a game does well online, people will be interested in making new maps. Even if the game is a few years old.
I think it will take awhile before everybody can play DIII on his/her PC or even want to. A great deal of gamers don't like 'mindless' First Person Shooters. Also 'more' is not always 'better'. Some FPS fans don't really like UnrealII as much as they did UnrealI. Why? Good question. I still remember the first time I saw the glowing corona light effects in UnrealI on my new Voodoo2 3D card. But expectations and demands are getting higher and higher and let's face it, gamers are spoiled. Take Splintercell, first time I saw this game I was like **. Few days later I got used to the graphics. I can only imagine how a software company must feel when after years of development their game is considered obsolete before it is even released (take Daikatana). Although I have faith in the id-guys and the Raven-boys, I'm dead sure DIII won't be taking over the mapping world, just because of its advanced engine.

I personally think the Q3 engine is not all that good. I hate the concept of designing brushes. An editor that just lets you make faces would be a lot better. Less work, no need for endless caulking and more freedom in design. I don't know why so many games use this engine.
People like Jv_map moh_rox and others like MPowell 1944 will be changing to the new engine.
I don't know about the others but I'm not going to change to a new engine that soon. First because my computer almost emits smoke while processing mohaa graphics, second because of the reason Pan mentioned: mohaa rox 8).

Butch you hit the spot hard. I am a HARD CORE WWI and WWII fan. Ive got tons of movies games (even the sorry ones). And Medal of honor is a great game. I do map only for games I like. And so far this is the ONLY game I like that I map in. But There are things called Mods and when DoomIII will come out Im more then sure someone will start a WWII mod.

You all seem to be speculating about Doom3 ,im sure you all have *leaked demo there is a map editor with it.
And there maps made to be played with the Demo.
Which supports maya interfacing direct similiar to Ut3 engine.

if theres a prize for making a WW2 map with doom its mine ,i used MOH textures to make a box with some models in it to test the compiler so i have won....gimme me prize :)

*leaked my arse, that was allowed out to tell the world they needed a better computer and to get mappers working with the engine which would lead to jobs when they sold the licence.

I won't play DOOM3, because it's unreal. I hate fake and unreal games, I like those based on historic events, e.g. Vietcong, WW2, WW1, Gulf War, not those that have laser beams and monsters.
Live to map, not map to live.
