Big Problem with fog!!!!

Post by coolmintyice »

Hi,

im making a single player map in which your ultimate objective is to kill Hilter.

anyway, :lol: :roll: the map is roughly 7000x10,000x1000 with:

farplane: 3000
farplane_color: .333 .333 .333

both were set in the worldspawn entity not in the script because i find that when implent fog with script i dont see any fog but all the surfaces such as floors and walls are covered with a gray layer of fog.

now, the first issue is the appearance of gray blocks far off in the distance as shown in the pic below also notice the grayish layer of fog on the wall as well. oh and the gray blocks appear only when i face that direction and at a certain angle otherwise they dont appear and the sky looks normal. how can i fix this?

<img src=http://www.pitt.edu/~monst3/grayblocks.gif>

The second issue is regarding the gray almost white layer of fog on the river as show below. how do i fix this?

the river should look like this and it does when i look at it facing down:
<img src=http://www.pitt.edu/~monst3/goodriver.gif>

Instead it looks like this when i move my view up.

Thanks in advance

That is caused by fog. Set ur farplane to 2500-3500 that range which i think is good.

The grey block is because u textured a caulk which u shouldn't for a sky. A sky sees what's behind it. See if you have any caulk there.

Hmm if it were that simple :roll:

It could be a good idea to make sure the artifacts don't happen if you remove the farplane completely.

Mohaa fog always acts a bit weird.

Yes, i'm definetly sure the grey block is caulk, cause some ppl misunderstood by applying caulk on the other side of the sky box (i've done that before :wink: ) so any objects behind the sky can be seen.

The shybox should not have any caulk faces. It should have sky texture on all sides of every brush. You can, however use "caulk sky" as the sky texture to make your sky the same color as the farplane color. It also must be on all sides of the brushes.

No you only need to texture the visible sides. All other faces may have the caulk texture. If you don't apply caulk to the outside of your skybox, q3map will do it for you ;)

I always put the caulk texture on any side the player can't see.
