scr file: how to make them?

Post by Otto »

OK this must be embarrassingly obvious but how do you make a scr file? I've got the whole thing up and running - map, textures, doors, AI, pathnodes etc etc BUT i can't make a scr file so can't do any scripting! :(

I've tried everything I can think of. My computer seems to think that scr = screensaver!! It won't let me open a .scr file and keeps giving me the 'not a valid Win32 application'.

What's happening?

Thanks in anticipation...

You most likely are doubleclicking the icon to open the .scr. It doesn't matter if Windows believes it to be screen saver. Just open notepad and use that program to open the .scr.

Thanks, Solar. Sorry about this but any chance you could talk me through it step by step. How do you open a scr file?

I'm probably doing this all wrong. I've opened a new Note Pad file and saved it with a .scr extension. I can't then open it because there is no option to open i.e. no 'Open with' or 'open', just 'Test'. As I said the computer thinks the file is now a screensaver. It's probably something really silly but I just can't fathom what I'm doing wrong!

Thanks again...

1. Open notepad.
2. Go to the File tab and select Open
3. Drop to "Files of type", select "all Files" from the dropdown menu.
4. Browse to your .scr location
5. Select your .scr and select "Open".

5 easy steps, how's that??

Thanks Solar.

Steps 1 to 3 OK then I'm stuck at step 4!! But, the good news is that I have managed to get it working by going through Pagis and opening it with Notepad by that route. Done the scripting and it works a treat! Thanks for your input because I'd just about given up!

Oh and nuggets, thanks, but that was my problem. When I right clicked I didn't get an 'open with' option. The computer thought that i wanted to install a screensaver. What eventually I had to do was to 'send to' Pagis and then open it in pagis with Notepad. Complicated but it works!!

Cheers again!

On word of advice. IMO scripting can be fun but for the new mapper or scriptor it can be a nightmare too. Start out slow. Don't try and make a map with 10 different threads and 3 objectives at first. An online script would be a good place to start. Single player scripts can be a challenge. Have fun!

Believe it or not Pagis is actually a scanning suite but the great thing as far as I'm concerned is that it allows you to manage and transfer docs and files all over the place. Anyway thanks again.

Otto

PS Gen Cobra, sound advice...I'm keeping it simple...very simple. Cheers!

An easy way to open the script file is just to rename it.

1. Right click on the script file and choose "rename".

2. Change the extention from ".scr" to ".txt".

3. Double click on the file and it will open with notepad or Wordpad depending on how long it is.

4. Rename it again, if you want to turn it back into a script file.
