when building your maps at what point do you texture? this is an opipion question.....i have a freind who waits till the end to texture everything another does the sky box last .......i seem to get more out of texturing after about 30% of my "goal size" of the map any others have preferences?

I usually texture after i add at least half of the map, or finish a logical section.

I don't wait till the very end because I like to see how my map looks as I build it.

yeah, me too!

it's horrible to have built half the map and then find out that you'll haven't the fitting textures, would have to scale them, get other edges where they don't fit and finally have to rebuild things...

On the other hand, this way I may forget or miss some faces that could be caulk!

Its all about art, after I do a building I just texture it with the image from my mind, also I got everything planned before I start the map so it dosn't really matter

Same here..,
I don't always start building with the caulk texture. It's hard to see any depth and you can't run a quick test because nothing would show up. Usually I get new (better) ideas when I'm browsing for textures and at the same time I can see what it will look like. At this point I'm not really paying too much attention to aligning.
Then when I'm happy with the result (so far) I start selecting a few brushes and turn them into caulk. Then I just select the important faces and apply the same textures that I used before (they are already loaded and in the list).

Yeah, I hate doing the caulk junk. I hate waiting for the textures to load up. So usually I just pick up misc_outside and texture all that I want. Then when I want another misc_outside texture I just get it from a diff. brush.

It all depends on what type of brush I'm creating. Like some of the others, I don't like a big mass of caulk to look at. But if I'm drawing a brush that will have some unseen faces, I'll use caulk. I learned this after finding out later how many unseen faces were textured and going back to caulk them. Than can be a hassle when you other brushes in the way. If it's a brush that doesn't have any unseen faces, then I'll tex it.

I pretty much texture as I go. Usually the first thing I do is plop in building roughly where I want them with the more or less correct height. Then I texture the whole thing with a texture I want in the map. I'll layout the whole thing in big blocks like this with maybe 15-20 different textures on the buildings from roads to concrete, woods, etc. That way I can either use 'show in use' or when I reload the map my basic textures all load up and I don't have to wade through 80% of them to use just what I want.

I like to then apply caulk before hollowing out my buildings, then wall by wall re-apply the textures so that I can line up windows, doors, broken stuff etc. Everyone has their style though. SKYBOXES... do that right off to get the right 'look' there, usually setup the farplane and stuff in the worldspawn to start off until I need a .SCR file later, then transfer that info to the script.

Eh, too much babble.........waiting on a compile...........
