Compiling Times

Post by Spike Naylor »

Me yet again

Have got a map (outdoors, 19 buildings all with doors and func windows.)
vis data size 126K
used vis_derived = 1
Lots of the brushes are right click detail (Purple lines-detail)
used q3map -vis gamedir etc
got upto 90% in about 6hrs, now sitting at 99% 19hrs.
hdd light flashes now and again.
How long would i expect it to take.
same map with 6 fewer buildings visdata size 90K took only 6hrs
how do I know it has locked (Obvuiously ctrl alt del shows it is still running.)
Doing me head in now.

Never use purple detail! Use the green detail (ctrl+shift+D). All purple details are entities -> no good!

126k vis data is quite much, you'll need to detail more for a faster compile.

There's a good chance the compiler is still running. In win2k / winxp you can check it's activity by pressing ctrl+shift+esc. You'll get a task manager where you can see the memory use and CPU time on the processes tab.
