New .Map Site Announced

Post by Surgeon »

OK so the Poll has closed and the results are in. The people have spoken and the next .Map site will be for *drumroll*.....

Call of Duty

It beat Half-Life 2 by just 16 votes. So with that in mind I have put up a forum here. The forum will be changed to reflect the colour scheme of the new .Map site, whenever that gets decided. I am wanting suggestions for a new colour scheme etc so feel free to give me any suggestions that you have in the forum. And yes I will be needing some dedicated people to help me out with the new site as Moderators, Tutorial Writers etc but I will let you know when I'm accepting offers.

And so the next Era for .Map begins

Still can't help but think this is a mistake. Gut feel tells me this game will not do well, either in sales or with the modding community. I hope I'm wrong. I guess time will tell.

You are soo wrong! This game is made by the same producers. MoH is messed up anyway so a new WW2 game is needed.

I would have to say I have my reservations about it, too.

Not that it's a terrible problem because HL2 will hardly have a lack of modding and mapping sites (Most will just port right over from HL/CS anyway).

Seeing as the theme will stay the same it probably makes more sense that .map carries on with CoD. At least CoD, with Activision, has more potential to have decent support.

My only worry is that everyone is raving about CoD and we've seen little more than the usual corporate driven hype and a few average screenshots of the game.

We will have no idea how good the game is at least until the demo is released and that's quite some time away.

Yes and there are more than a few good HL editing sites so i didn't really want to go "against" them...

Although im a n00b at mapping, but learning faster then lightning () i think this is great! Both games looks really cool, HL2 looks amazing it makes me drooL every time i look at those preview movies/screenshots, but im all for WW2 games, not into scifi FPS (tried UT2003 last weekend, 2 hours later i was back in the shop returning it) yuk! CoD looks promising, espescially when the developer team is from good ol' Mohaa and Activision! I really look forward for this, and till then im going to eat when im mapping, map in my dreams, map in my head when i go for a walk with my d0g, map map map...

Doom3 looks cool, but hey, who's bying a new supercomputer only for that game... seems buggy, maybe cuz its only a alpha demo. btw running around in a surreal world by yourself, killing 30.000 monsters/zombies/shady looking guys in the dark... no thanks, me no like.

CoD has a future, and i will sure be there

m0g thats where your imaginations stops. Doom3 engine will be by far the best engine. Who gives a sh*t that the doom3 game is coming out. the only thing Im worried about is.... the engine. Its so friggin powerfull. It will make mohaa look like tetris.

BTW Im downloading the leaked alpha version of HL2 17% finnished. at 56kbs download speed.

my imagination has nothing to with this...
I know the engine rocks a$$, so does the HL2 engine according to the stuff i've seen. I only meant that it would be great to see a CoD mapping site, by people that hangs here... CoD is a new game and needs to be taken care of by serious, respected and experienced mappers out there...

HL/CS has its own mapping community and I think it would be 'taking the wrong path' by creating a new HL2 mapsite, I know i will stick to Mohaa and when CoD is out i will look into that world. Its just my taste of gametype that i like. Of course i'll have a look at HL2 when its out, but probably only the gaming bit. The Doom3 engine looks fantastic of what i've seen, but seeing myself to start mapping for that game.. no, not yet, not ready for that now (insert noob alert scream here  ). I think that game has a 'touch and feel' of its own with its dark, 'shadowy' and mysterious levels... im not into those things as i said earlier in my previous post. Like it to be more realistic like mohaa and soon CoD. Hey, maybe its just me and my opinion, maybe its because its really late at night here know and im almost falling asleep writing this nonses...

phuh, first i need to learn one engine and then i'll move on with the technologies.
My head is already full of stuff with other applications and crazy stuff...

Well its late, and please dont take this the wrong way :)

My reservations are based on these facts:

1. No FFA/TDM mode. That's about 50% of the players you lost.

2. There are already a glut of FPS war games and more on the way.

3. More than 90% of gamers don't care about mod support.

4. The Q3 engine is old. There are at least 3 new engines to attract modders. Even the $100 Torque engine is better than Q3.

5. MOH still has a huge gaming community. If I wanted to continue to use the Q3 engine, I'd stay here.
