Well, it depends on if you are using LOD Terrain or just a brush for the ground. If it is LOD, you can highlight just one 512 X 512 section by holding down Ctrl and Shift and clicking on the ground. Then you can apply the crater texture that looks like the rest of the terrain. After that you shift click on the ground and hit key V. Find the center of the crater and drag it down about 64 units.

For the rubble pile, you need to create a patch mesh (curve menu) and shape it into a little hill much like you did for the LOD Terrain. Apply a rubble texture to it and place it by your wall--it is ok if it overlaps the wall and terrain. Add sticks, boards, and chunks of wall to make it look even more real.

There's also a modest tutorial in the SDK folder that covers LOD and such and if you dig around this site some you're sure to find a lot of reading material on such issues. Trial and error are the best teachers though. In some cases you'll think LOD is a bad idea and use a patch mesh, but then realize that LOD is much better. Be careful with the patch mesh thing, it is hard on your frame rates compared to LOD terrain. Both can be effective yet a huge pain in the a** to use.
