filters
Sometimes the View/filters turn themselves on. If any are on, their names show up in the status line at the very top of the editor.
Also, if there is a bad line of text in the .map file, it will cause some entities to be hidden and a small untextured box will show up near the center of the grid. You can open the .map file with a text editor, like Wordpad, to see if your entities are still there and try to find the bad line.

If Use quake3 .map format is check in preferences and a surface parm is set it can cause a problem like this also your detail brushes won't stay detail . Also sometimes you can get a bad brush or entity , use edit->mapinfo and look how many brushes it says you have in your map . Then open your map in a text editor and look for that numbered brush -1 , brushes start at 0 , this may be a bad brush that is keeping all the brushes after it to not load . Any way if the number of brushes in the text editor is greater than the number reported by map info then you know it is probably a bad brush . Entities are put in the .map file after brushes so if this is the cause then every thing after the error won't load includeing entities .
