Advice on improving fps plz

Post by Daniel Radcliffe »

Hi all, i need to improve teh fps of my map, most of its fine, but the very center of the map my fps drops to about 20. Which is ok for me, but lower end systems will struggle.

I have created a some of screenshots to show you the center of the map where the problem is and was wandering if anyone could five me advice or have any ideas on improving the fps of the map.

The main problem is that from this point you can see the majority of the buildings and entities within the map. And there are some entities which i supsect, although do now know, which are being drawn but cannot be seen unless you are practiaclly with the building.

The third scrennshot is from the other end of the map, looking slightly off the center. The small brick building just to the right of the center contains several entities. Trucks, bikes etc.

Another cause for the low fps i have are the benches, these benches are made up of individual brushes, and although i will if i need to, i would prefer to not remove these from the platforms, as they would leave the platform looking rather plain and empty.

Plz can you help me increase the fps so that i can finish off other little details in the map.

Many thx in advance.

Well those benches you mention, make them detail, also adjust the brightness on your screenies, would make it easier to see whats going on.
Philip II of Macedon sent a message to Sparta:
"If I win this war, you will be slaves forever."
The Spartan ephors sent back a one word reply: "If".

I'd need some more info... go to those same spots and use r_showtris 2... (and make it brighter) :D

First of all I must say that is an impressive map, lots of detail.

When looking around, I noticed you have your windows textured on all sides. That gave me z-fighting on my card. Put the nodraw texture on faces you wouldnt see. Usually thats every face except one 'big' side. Think of the grates. You nodraw all sides except one. Do that with the windows. On the very very top most parts of that big... thing, you can caulk/nodraw those parts because I don't think the player can get high enough to see it. Also near the top, where all those black brushes join, there was a lack of caulk there... try painting caulk there too.

You know what I mean. Texturing faces with the caulk texture.
