Make a big brush that has width/height dimensions that equal or are multiples of 512. so you can have a brush that is 1024x512, 512x1024, 4096x4096, 8192x16384, and so on...

Click LOD Terrain>Create from brush. Your brush will turn into a mass of triangles. Click LOD Terrain>Scale (100% triangles). Depending on your computer, and how big your LOD Terrain is, you might get some slowdown. If you can't take the slowdown, click View>Cubic Clip Terrain. That will only render parts of LOD that are within a set distance from the camera, sort of like fog. If you want this "farplane" to be farther away, press ( CTRL ) + ( SHIFT ) + ( ] ). To make it closer, press ( CTRL ) + ( SHIFT ) + ( [ ).

If you have one 2d window, press CTRL+TAB to switch to XZ Front view. If you have multiple 2d windows, just focus on the XZ Front view. Now select the LOD Terrain, and press V. You'll see bunches of pink/purple dots. Now in the 3d view, click one of the dots where you want to "morph" the terrain, and it will turn black. Now go to the XZ Front view, and find that black dot (don't click anything, or it will go away). When you have found the dot, put your cursor over it, hold the left mouse button, and drag either up or down to morph the terrain. When you're done, press ESC. :D

Lod can be used for mountains but if it is too steep then you may run into problems. Patches i believe would be the way to go outta the 2 proposed ideas so far but if i may be so bold, use a brush and let the textures do the workin for you. Ive seen several good use of brushs for mountains and since im assuming you will be able to see them from every point on the map a low face count would be key. My .02 hope it helps.
