This new MOH mapping guide is in the form of a Windows help screen and is very good.

Not bad :)

Seems like a very good document to get a new mapper starting. 8-)

However I'd like to advise any readers not to see this as a 'mapping bible', as I've found several inaccuracies and minor errors. So above all read it with care.

Anyway... Turret_Toad it doesn't look you have a .map account. If you're reading this nonetheless please focus on the following line:

well done

btw... tltrude, did you ask him for distribution permission?

permission

Post by tltrude »

Permission, permission, I don't need no stinking permission! Ha ha! It became public domain when he posted the link over at the TMT (public) forum. I found minor mistakes too, but he will probably update it sooner or later. I think it is a great guide, and I like his initials too!

Actually...I'm Turret_toad. :D I'm not quite sure why I didn't put that as my user name at .MAP in the first place. Anyway...as the tutorial err...tutorials are my first ones, I needed some people to point out errors. I can always correct it and release another one. If someone could give me some errors to fix, I'd appreciate it. :) Also a message to people who download this guide, I agree completely with jv. Don't use this guide exclusively. I was putting it up mainly for people to point out errors with it.

PS- no problem with the distribution tltrude. Don't distribute it to too many sites though until I've fixed it. tnx

PSS- and the initials...you could use it too lol :D tom_trude = T_T

Ladder

Post by tltrude »

In the ladder guide you should mention about the error below--we see it a lot here. It cause gray, white, and yellow lines to shoot out of the rail brushes that are too long, and have rungs the same size as the rails--like your example ladder rungs. It also happens with long balcony railings.

ERROR: MAX_POINTS_ON_WINDING exceeded

There are too many vertices repeating themselves along a single axis (ie you have an extremely long single brush). It can also mean you have a "brush side polygon" somewhere with more than 64 corner points.

SOLUTION: Find the offending brush (edit -> find entity/brush, and enter the brush number.) and either delete it or cut it into smaller pieces.

things i'd point out in the tut:

the caulk texture is NOT 'common/blank_lightmap', which looks the same in the texture window.

Rotating door: the angle/90 is fine for the door in your tut, but for a door rotated by 90?, u need no or an angle of 0?

Ok peoples, I fixed those things you pointed out, fixed some critical typos, and fixed the accuracy of my ladder diagram. I copy/pasted your error/solution statement, tltrude, I hope you don't mind  I'm going to go around for a final scour of the file and then release it.
