Loading the map should take about 10-20 seconds.
Compiling a map may take 24 hours if its complex.
You can load a map by writing:

Your map name has to to be one word. Like this:
my_map.bsp
Place that file in MOHAA/main/maps/dm (create a dm folder if you don't have one) and it should show up on the list of "team match" games.

compile
Yes, you save your map as my_mapname.map or whatever name you want (all_one_word). When you compile it, it will be saved as my_mapname.bsp. And, that is what you put in the maps/dm folder.
Singleplayer bsp files would just go in the "maps" folder, but they should be named "test_mymapname.bsp"--so the sounds will work.
The reason your map does not work is probably because you didn't compile it, or you are missing an info_player_start and a light. It is also good to put in an info_player_allied, and an info_player_axis. Everything has to be inside a room or a skybox.
