No Draw and fps

Post by Axion »

This is probably a silly question, but I just have to ask it.

I know that you should use caulk to texture the faces of brushes that won't be seen from the gamer's point of view. But doesn't the game engine still draw those faces, adding to the fps? Would using no draw significantly help framerates, or would it do nothing?

It seems to me that since caulk is invisble anyway, using no draw is basically the same thing, except that it would leave less work for the game engine.

So, am I on to something here, or am I horribly misinformed and mistaken?

I read it, but I still don't think that the question was answered in full.

jv says - and i believe rather him than anybody else, but make some tests yourself (with r_showtris 2) - that "the compiler cannot see through caulk. The compiler can see through nodraw though."
so u rather would use only caulk (to improve fps) instead of nodraw, but then caulk cannot be shot through, so u will use nodraw for faces that shall not be seen but shot through.
