a quicker way to deselect vertices

i was watching a video on lod terrain by bagel and when he was de-selecting vertices he was doing it one at a time saying there is no quicker way but there is just hold shift and click on one and it de-selects the rest in that line! and im only a beginer! nice to know these experts don't know it all yet.

Well, I dont know who knows it and who doesn't, but you can also left click somewhere over the verticies you're selecting, and hold down the left mouse button and drag a blue window over the verticies and all that are in the box will be selected. (I learned that one from crunch by the way)
