100 + hours wasted

Post by hogleg »

I spent over 100 hours on my map, had all the terrain,9 buildings, landscaping, the map was done except adding a few more AI when I deleted my .map file and backup.

All I have is the .bsp file. I tried the bsp to map conversion.
It wacked out my map so bad that I think I'll trash it all

It was pretty big, compiled fast and had great FPS, I think Im going to puke!

Music to live by now "BACK UP YOUR MAP FILE!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Are you shure you deleted the .bak file? If yes, hmm too bad...

But we can always find a way to deal with ai on an "closed" map...Did you put the path nodes already?

We never lost time, we are always learning something. You've used this time to learn and this is good...

pm me if you want some help w/ your bsp.

AH, im sorry to hear that.... Sadly the same thing happened to me... TWICE.

The first map was VERY close to being complete, just a few more additions here and there, when WAM. i got hit with a virus (a bad one) that i lost EVERYTHING on my computer... I thought of it as my 'practice map' and learned how to do things from that.

The second time, it had the potential to be a very good map, i had it almost done, again just a few additions left... when WAM. my harddrive burnt up, and i lost the map -_-... i asked everyone that i sent it to if they had a copy, but they deleted. Arg. I dread the next time something like this happens.

Another good tip is to have a cd-rw or cd-r disk with your map files burnt onto them. That way you know you wont lose them unless you lose the disk.

Yep Thats why I have my dvdrw in all the time, serves as a temp hard drive that wont let windows mess it up. Thats why the no cd cracks for games are so valuble to me so I dont have to stick the game cds in over and over and over.

Good luck and hope you somehow find a backup somewhere
I once was lost, but now........... I'm still lost!

Good thinking... I often forget that function in Windows, Hope you get it back. Loosing stuff that way sucks big time.

Yes unfortunatly I hit shift delete, doing that way its history.
And yeah its a learning experience for sure. I make multiple back ups now!
And yes I had path nodes laid out as well, when I decompiled my bsp file the nodes were gone. Caulk was gone, origins were gone, textures were screwed up.

Learn & live eh

Thanks everyone!........Next map is gonna rule!! :D

My condolences, hogleg. Seriously. As a fellow mapper, I feel for you.

Wait... :D

If you have your map already scattered of info_pathnodes, then the rest is ...er... easy! The decompiler gets rid of the nodes, but they're there, in the bsp! :D

What do you have (or want) to do more in your map? Maybe we can do it by script!

I worked with it for awhile, just seems like to me that its so screwed up that I will end up spending more time trying to fix everything and even then I will be chasing problems on every compile..

So I think I'll start a new map and import the buildings that arent so bad.
I want a really clean map with great FPS sooo back to the drawing board lads.

Yes unfortunatly I hit shift delete, doing that way its history
thats not entirly correct.sometimes its lost 4 ever but u can still try a few things b4 u give up,although time is a very important factor here.if u have norton antivirus installed it usually protects the recycle bin meaning that any files deleted whatsoever (yes even with shift+del)can be recovered right away (or a small time later).however if u dont have norton antivirus or any of nortons tools on ur pc u can try searching 4 a data recovery tool, usually they require u 2 pay money ,but i think the trial should let u recover it (if u can find it).
when u delete somehting u tell window that this area is clear 2 write on but its not deleted entirly ,however as time passes windows will probably write there (or u mmove or copy somehting in its place )overwriting the older data.if i were u ,id limit my use of the drive that contained the map and search 4 a data recovery tool (dload it on another drive) and search the drive that had the map,if u find it then party and have fun ,oh and click recover ofcourse  .if u cant ,then ...well....u did all that u can do ,think of the map as if it passed onto a better life
i hope u understood what i am trying 2 say .
