hollow - ok or not?
rght from the start of my mapping carreer (about a year, more i think, yr and a half?) i have always been told dont use hollow. and i have told people that. know i am doubting myself because people have said it is ok - maybe mappers with less experience than me but probably better mappers lol - am i wrong i i was with hmm... door angles and the AI system i dreamt lol jv + wacko +tltrude know bout them i think!
here is the arguments for hollowing i have recieved:
"I use the hollow tool and my fps hasnt been anywhere below 80 fps. I have used it on every building I've ever made. You just need to make sure your brushes dont overlap one another."
"i use the hollow button all the time in my maps and they compile fine. escpecially cuz i make it so they dont Dup plane on me"
"i make sure that none of the new brushes Dupe plane. most i the maps that i do turn out pretty good."
amk i wrong to stick by this? i know i have been in the past lol.
cheers,

There is nothing wrong with using the hollow tool at all.
Using it, and then adjusting the vertices so that the edges don't overlap is equivalent to creating the individual brushes in the places that you want them. Only thing to keep in mind, really, is that your grid setting will determine the thickness of the hollowed brush.

I dont use it much, but I think its a good tool to make construction of buildings and such faster. However it's easy to get sloppy with it so make sure you adjust the brush's verticies before moving on. Have at it, it is your map, right?
I do however use it EVERY time I make a sky box.
I once was lost, but now........... I'm still lost!

buildings
I have seen maps where every box and building is hollowed out, even if the player will never see inside. That seems like a bad idea to me, but you can see that in map m4L0, in the farm buildings and silo--2015 made that one. Just something to think about.

I don't use CSG or hollow, but that's just personal preference.

Mostly when i create buildings i don't use Hollow. I find that making each wall seperately you can think 'outside the box' and be more creative. Although, i DO use hollow on occasions to make some objects...
I do use CSG though. Sometimes when i make a wall, and i realize later on that i want a window or doorframe in that wall, i will CSG instead of rebuilding the entire wall.
