OH YEAH, Unfortunately people are still forced to have those relics :? That is also where the lazy part of using custom maps comes into play.
I could understand it if you were downloading on a 56k, but most servers should be running on broadband (I would think) I got the slow speed from my cable comp. and I dl at 220k, now how hard is that to dl a map???

Hey Bjarne, maybe you could get some donations from frequent fliers on this site and start an all custom map server, and if you did, then password protect the SOB so the lazies cant join

Also what would help is if someone made a server program that a server could use that uploads the map to the player trying to join automatically, and then places the file in the main folder, kinda like a windows update or a norton live update. That would be sick. And all they would have to do is wait a little bit for it to finish.

That is similar to a game that I own. It's Operation Flash Point. As long as there is a quick connection it doesnt take long at all to get into a game. Most of the time the people that are hosting dont allow 56kers cause the lag and takes them too long to get into the game.

No conspiracy, just meant that the only excuse for not dl'ing a map would be you are on a 56k connection. And I am sorry for your misfortune, in having to use a 56k. It doesnt mean you're any less of a person. It just means your machine is going to be SLLOOOWWW! :?

for best game play, you just really cant trust people on 56k modems. They will lag not only themselves but others. We dont discriminate 56'ers we jsut kick for ping at 200 =) if you cant stay under 200, sorry, but it effects everyone else on the server when your ping is 300-500 and if its like 800 everyone else jumps to 300.

i know,i was just kidding  .i have 2 accept it cause its i who has the problem (the 56) not the others .the dsl is so expensive where i live,u have 2 share it with at least 10 others so it becomes affordable, but then u split it up 2 small speeds equivalent 2 the 56 modem .

A difference between Mohaa server admins and RTCW.
As you know both of these games of tons of maps. But for some reason RTCW plays almost ALL cutom maps on almost ALL of their servers. I think it is partly the admins fault for not getting into downloading new maps. If they admins did this, then the players would be FORCED to download the custom maps, or stay offline.

Besides I have seen maps here that are much better looking then what EA has come up with (including ''The Canal").

The server on which I am an admin, runs omaha all the tiem with rifles, because it is HIGHLY competitive. EA made many good maps and SOME custom maps arent up to par, especialy when it comes to framerates.

That said, I am aggressively trying to get people on our server to download and play custom maps. Granted they arent in full rotation, but our server isnt aimed at what has come to be the 'average' moh player. It is not realism, and more you can only use stock rifles. This is the only reason why omaha is so competitve on our server. Every other weekend we feauture custom maps or modded formats on stock ones, and it is really hard to get people to bother to play them.

I personaly put in alot of effort in trying to get these maps played and when people do show up it is well worth it. It is far from easy though.

We run Canal at the moment on ]-[ss custom server - 195.149.21.7:12205
Great map. TDM mind. Will check out this OBJ for sure and swap to OBJ if it rules like u say it does...
Problem with getting your map out there is visibility - get some screenshots and put them on a webpage and have the keywords mohaa custom map etc. We're always on the lookout for cool maps and if i can't find em by search engine - what hope have i got?
Also hit clan forums - clans that run servers that is - tell em bout ur map... if ppl come in our forum & say "dude - u gotta run this map" - chances are we will :)
imo objective maps are rarer so if u got a goodie - it will pull ppl from TDM coz ppl like a change... well, ppl i know anyway... can't speak for everyone :P

peace

Wow, lots of posts here and I havent gotten a single notification...
Well, ass you can see there are a multitude of reasons why a map can fail or succeed. As a mapper you probably should do 2 things to get the maximum effect:
1) Think playability! No one plays a map that is no fun to play. If it looks good they may give it a second chance, but if it is still a no fum map: it will be shot down.
2) Make some noice! Once the map is ready ( and properly tested people! ): tell people about it in any way you can... If they don't know It exists, they won't play it.

OK, everybody: get out there and find the 5 best maps, then contact 5 servers you play on and ask them to run those 5 maps in rotation. Go on, do it at once! :!:

I am thinking of making a onj mapppack for servers, that might be good, also a skinny server mappack with no bots and no ai, just built for framerates. Players can dl one large file and play 6 or 8 of my custom maps.

Remanes to be sean I guess.
