there are so much models in both companies and determining which one 2 buy is a bit hard,money is not a problem but the cheaper the better if u know what i mean.so paractically what i need is a bit of experience from u ppl,tell me what vga cards u have tried and if they worked fine or had trouble or which company u like most or anything u feel suitable 4 this subject

i did c a benchmark of ati cards and geforce cards .ati cards seemed 2 outperform geforce cards but then again some ppl say benchmarks are sometimes biased.i want 2 buy a card which will have the least amount of trouble ,something like a fan problem can be really devistating but discovering later it doesnt play a certain game or messes up another ,or messes up my motherboard (like what i heard about the radeon9600) would be more devistating

I prefer ATI cards, but Nvidia cards are excellent, too.

Get the best card you can afford, because they always end up wanting when newer games, that use the latest cards, are released.
I have no comparison to offer. I have two dif. machines, both with ATI and have never had any problems. But I would not turn anyone away from nvidia either. Take tltrudes advice and buy the best one you can afford.
One thing I can advise is if you buy ATI, go with the "actual" ATI built card, not the offbrand card with an ATI chipset in it. I have heard of at least a dozen people who have had problems with offbrands.
Good luck and have fun.

ive been building alot of pcs 4 a while now and i know alot about them,but i lack the knowlegde on "high end" vga cards.my only experience is with "medium" vga cards like the geforce 4 mx 440 and the radeon 9200 .
tnx 4 ur replies every1
the problem is i heard that the new geforce fx series has trouble with dx9 applications and doesnt support it very well.however i havent heard of fan problems on them.i laso heard of the radeon 9600 which messes up motherboards.so i wanna be careful with what i choose cause i wont have this window of opportunity againati = problems
nvidia = reliability
whats the difference?One thing I can advise is if you buy ATI, go with the "actual" ATI built card, not the offbrand card with an ATI chipset in it
hopefully thats what ill do but i dont know which is the "best" card.i few model numbers or names would help alotGet the best card you can afford

Okay, Heres the lowdown.
I got a Geforce4Ti4600 About a Year Ago.
Its a 128mb, And Runs Perfect. It has its own fan, i never have problems with it.
My dad got a Radeon 9700(?) i think it was, and I Didnt notice anything wrong with it. Like the geforce, it has its own fan, but the card itself is red(apposed to green).
Im not sure how much the ATI is Or how Much the Nvidia Is either, But both are nice.

Ive played more than u.
The difference is off brand companies buy the radeon chipsets and call them radeon cards, which is kinda what it is, but the card itself is not made by ATI (same thing goes for Nvidia). In other words it's like buying a motor made by some joe blow who put ford pistons in it, and calls it a ford "powered" motor!
The bad part about it is, if you're not a savy consumer, you will be fooled. Some companies make good cards and some dont. I have quite alot of freinds in our lan group with all kinds of different cards, and the only ones who have problems are the ones with the off-brand cards! (both ATI and Nvidia chipsets) As I said earlier I have 2 ATI cards and have never had any problems. On the other hand all 4 of our machines at work are running the Nvidia ti4600 G-force (something) and have never had any problems with those either. Just remember you get what you pay for!
go here http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications ... p?CatId=28
and you can see there are "XFX" nvidia geforce cards and "connect3d" radeon cards, neither made by ATI or Nvidia themselves. There are also
ATI radeon cards. (notice the price difference)
hope that helps ya understand what I mean anyways
One more thing, if you go to ATI's website you have the option for support of ATI built cards and ATI powered cards.

A 'long term' vga card is probably something which just does not exist. How long do you think this 'long term' will be? And how much do u have to pay more, just to make this term half a year longer?!
If you look at the past, you'll see that every 'high end' card has become outdated almost before u have built it in your pc.
I recently bought a GF5900 for about 350 Euro, it didn't work properly and I sent it back. I then had to wait for about 2 months to finally get a working card. Bad luck, yes, but now, I could buy the same card for 250,-...
If u want to have a vga card that e.g. fully supports upcoming games like HL2 or DOOM3, u'd have to spend a big pile of money. But this card will probably cost half the money when finally those games are out!
So my advice would be rather to buy a card for half the money a 'high end' card would cost and do the same a year or 1.5 later.
Dunno much about ATI cards. A friend has one and he was very happy when he found a new checkbox in the recent driver which enables an automatic reboot of just the gpu when it locks up, which happened quite often in MOHAA (just there
). Never needed such a 'button' for one of my GeForce cards, but then, others are probably very content with their Radeons...
And don't give too much on statements like 'Radeons are better for HL2'. This means just as much as 'Valve gets lots of money from ATI' (and probably ID from NVidia
)

well,if i keep waiting then ill never buy a vga card
.like u say the fx 5900 is now cheaper.but there is the fx 5950 and generaly everyrthing gets cheaper by time.but im planning 2 buy a card that will spend at least a year ,yeah i will pay alot but i will live happily ever after (in the period of time that games dont need higher power) .im planning 2 buy it in the summer holidays.so it would get cheaper anyways by time.but i dont want 2 buy something and regret that i didnt buy something else through out that period.i bet ur happy with ur fx 5900,i want 2 be happy 2 for the longest time possible.
