Quick question, for anyone who speaks german...

Post by Splaetos »

I beleive at least one or two of you are german or speak it?

anyway....

tell me if this is correct....

der gefangnis = the prison

gefangenshaft = imprisonment?

The two versions of my Prison map, will bear these names, at least on the title screen(im not sure if americans will be able to get thier 'fingers' around obj/lib_gefangenshaft too easily lol...) so it would be nice if I was using the proper words =)

Would the Germans name a prison "The Prison"?

I looked up "Stammlager" and it means "Base Camp". In the war they used a shorter name "Stalag", as in the movie "Stalag 17". The word "Lager" can mean "camp" or "warehouse", I think.

This is the best translation site I've seen.

well thats the thing, I dont want a name that has to do with a camp, or a 'war prison' of any kind, as that was not my intention. I speak precious little german, and its of no use here(Ich liebe Dich!).

I really like the word Gefangenshaft, and if it does translate as 'imprisonment' I think it will server my purpose well. (there was a different word for incarceration, but I liked this one better =) )

Also, as far as der gefangnis, your probably right that germans wouldnt refer to it as such, any more then americans refer to it as the prison(except of course, those of us who live in prison towns where have of people work at 'the prison') But, I would have no problem naming a map something like 'the Prison' meaning naming it with a simple description of what it is. I probably wouldnt literaly use the name 'the prison' because I dont really like the word much, but the general naming philosophy(if you understood what i said above lol) I kind of like at times.

hmmm perhaps I can better illustrate by example, the naming philoshy I am referring to is like:

The camp.
The fotress.
The Canal(aha!)
The beach
The castle

etc etc etc

they are not expressive titles, on the contrary they are completely simplistic, but at times simplicity can have its own eloquence. Providing, of course, that you like the actual word, which as I stated, I dont much, in the case of prison. I do like a few of the german words Ive seen translaters spit out tho =)

Lagerhuas = Warehouse

And a small tidbit of info about my map- Reichsbahn roughly means "Empire Train".

Remember in German every Noun should start with a Capital :wink:

Also, I'm not sure, but I think 'gefangnis' requires an 'Umlaut' above the 'a', just to smooth out the pronunciation as the combination of an 'a' and an 'i' generally results in a crippled tongue :P

So I think it should be Gefaengnis (ae should be an a with 2 dots above, but it doesn't seem to work right now :?)... best ask some of the real Germans around here (like Wacko) 8-)

sorry, didn't see this earlier. maybe better pm me for something like this

der gefangnis = the prison = Das Gef?ngnis (in case the '?' doesn't show up, it's 'ae' indeed)

gefangenshaft = imprisonment? = Gefangenschaft

Gef?ngnis could also be Knast (rather slang), Kerker (medieval), or Strafanstalt
