Adobe Acrobat is the prog to use (or rather the included Destiller)
But there might be something else doing the job (more or less). Go to http://www.download.com and see what u can find. CutePDF seems to be good, but I never tried it (http://download.com.com/3000-6675-10220 ... ag=lst-3-2.

I did a google search too. There's some web sites that creates the document itself in your desktop, pretty cool...But CutePDF is free and do the job wonderfully!

The only problem, and it seems to be general, it's editing the pdf. I found this CAD-KAS PDF Editor ($79) edits pretty well but ...$79?

There should be a cheaper way, ha? Just add some bookmarks...

As was pointed out before by someone earlier, you can type up your manual in Word, then go Print to file, instead of printing to your printer. It will make a pdf of your word doc, this may be the solution.

I just press the PDF generation button on any part of my Wiki site to generate a PDF version of it :)

It uses an open source PDF generator called R&0S PDF

Go file/print then when the printer dialog box comes up you should see the list of installed printers ie: hewlett packard 4500, so instead of selecting this printer you should be able to make it print to file, or print to pdf, instead of printing to the hewlett packard 4500.

Hope this works out for you, persisit in the hunt on that printer dialog window and you will find what your looking for.
