Vis is a compile method, it's what makes the bytes of code to tell the comp what to draw onscreen. unfortunately, this is a huge obstacle for a mapper because it directly ties into fps, or frames per seconds.

in little maps (like yours m8, so far) it really doesn't matter if you use some methods to improve your Vis in the level, caulking is the most effective method for this, next up if your map is still laggy is vis_leafgroups, which are similer to areaportals, but for rooms and last are areaportals, which prevent the comp from drawing certain areas of the map if no one is near them. there's a tut on all these but areaportals i find to be most useful indoors. or a map like vs rocket facility benifits greatly from these.

i could go on and on, but im sure someone else can explain these better than me. :D

FPS

Post by tltrude »

FPS is, as lizardkid said, Frames Per Second. The higher it is, the smoother the game will run. You can turn your FPS meter on by typing "fps 1" in the console--"fps 0" turns it off.

About vis_leafgroups (also called manual vis):

You make 2 boxes from brushes. Give'em proper targetnames (box1 and box2, for ex.). Change them to vis_leafgroups.

You target box1 to box2.

When you're inside box1, nothing inside box2 is draw!

Imagine the possibilties...

Learn to use Hint Brushes as well. They work great for areas in your map where VIS is hard to control. They are a little harder to understand and use but work effectively if setup proper. They are great for corridors and rooms such as hall ways and tunnels. You can find good information on them here at .MAP.

to see your frames per second bring down the console and type

Code: Select all

fps 1
it'll bring up a nice little thing showing you your current frames per second.
