Freakin computer problems

Post by M&M »

THATS IT.IVE HAD IT WITH ONE OF MY COMPs
ive been trying to fix it for a very loooooong period of time .it crashes in alot of cases that seem very normal .specially when i run mohaa .i tried
-changing the harddrive
-ram
-fan
-data cables
-vga card
-reseting the cmos
-reisntalling windows multiple times.

and non of the previous solutions have worked .

here are the comps specs
-p3 800 mhz
-64mbs geforce 4 mx 440 (pci)
-40 gbs hdd
-256 sdram

imho,i think its a powerful old comp .its not modern but it "WAS" very useful when i used to use it and when it was stable.however since the problems started i cant seem to get conrtol over that pc again .im just out of ideas .im gonna start going thru the list i said above "AGAIN" in hopes that one of them was abit was replaced by something fauly.
note that i have other pcs so an "upgrade" wouldnt be a solution .i want to fix "this" pc.

here is a look at what it does so u can help me think of a way to fix it

-crashes giving something like this in any random (not the moderator, the word itself) map Image

this error comes in different versions
sometimes it says error in NVOPENGL (or something like it) .and sometimes the error is in KERNEL

-after trying a logfile 1 this is what i got

Code: Select all

note: that the sound card isnt properly identified .so the sound doesnt work .this is because i just reisnalled windows and was 2 lazy to install the sound drivers cause i had the feeling that i didnt fix anyhting .

-there is also another error that used to appear on certain maps which said that some of the textures couldnt be loaded and the game would crash to the desktop showing the console with the error message at the bottom.

IM CLUELESS,plz save me b4 i decide against that comp

From the looks of the log it seems you are missing the file sound/null.wav, check that. It looks like MOHAA relaized you were getting into an infinite loop and terminated. :?

well,im not missing any game files .
i did mention that the sound driver isnt installed .so the null.wav is there ,it just cant be played .i forgot 2 mention that mohaa does run and i can play a while with it.when i make a server it works randomly .1st time runs ok,2nd time runs ok 3rd time crashes ,something like that .sometimes it crashes from the 1st time and sometimes it crashes in the 5th time .
other than that there are several other problems throughout the comp itself .
for instance .when i reinstalled windows ,it crashes a couple of days later with a windows protection error (this is Win ME we are talking about)
after a while registry errors happen for no apparent reason and without installing any software b4 it .and when it reverts to an older image it goes to the image when u 1st installed windows .thats what happened to me and i got lazy and didnt want 2 do the sound driver install (2 lazy 2 look 4 cd again).however b4 that when all drivers were installed ,the game would still crash giving the same errors and would stop command execution suddently 4 no reason :?

interesting !!!
i didnt do that but i have the antivirus (norton 2003 ) upto date .if it detected anything in its routine scans it would have said so.
also ,i did format the drive and changed the whole harddrive also so i doubt the harddrive is airborne  if there was one
but i guess im desperate enough to do a virus scan after all that i said .

any1 knows any solutions keep em coming

A virus scan might be worth it. And if you've done a reformat, well I don't know what can escape that. Unless you have a corrupt copy of MOHAA.

well, the scan as i suspected didnt find anything .
i also dont know what can escape a reformat (memory resident virus?)
but what can escape a different harddrive :?
and no ,the mohaa version isnt fauly as it runs on 7 other pcs ,smooth as silk .

also ,the cpu temp is in the range of 40 +-10 Celsius .so that quite cool i guess .but i think it all started after changin the fan. not sure cause that was along while ago and my memory of that part is starting to get blurry.
i tight als obe the vga card although i remember vividly that it did work fine 4 quite sometime after installing the card .im just so suspicious in everything :?
would a bios flash help?i remember reading a long while ago here somewhere (or somewhere else)that some1 had a some problems with the pc and after flashing the bios it worked fine

as u have other Pcs , the solution might be easier to find for u then for most of us: Try to exchange cards one by one. I would (reading the log) start with the sound card, but u should also try VGA, LAN, RAM...

well,i told u i tried changing the harddrive
cant change the vga card as all i have are agp cards and the one in that pc is a pci card (no agp slot)
dont think its the lan as its working fine and nothing happens when i use network resources .
and i tried changing the ram.it was 2 128mbs chips .replaced them with one 256mbs and still nothing  .
i tried replacing the winme source (although ive been using it 4 a long while).
i cant think of what could cause such a malicous behaviour

why not take a wav and name it null.wav to see if it works?
sometimes my comp does that too, when i run out of resources, like if im running PSP in the background for some skin editing or soemthing. try getting a program called ram booster to free up some of that ram, but it may be ur PC is just too old. when did tis start happeneing? it seems as though u re-built ur comp with all that new stuff, so i would just check for a problem with MOHAA. try installing it to the default directory if u dont already, and maybe take some pk3's out of main so there is less to load when u join/start games and it doesnt toll on ur resources.

Afternoon, M&M.

For starters; install your sound-card drivers. The OS needs those drivers to communicate with the hardware (in this case: your sound card) correctly.

I've always found WinME the worst OS Microsoft has ever developed.
I have a machine with similar specs to yours. The first day I had the machine it crashed 5 times, and all I did that day was play MS Hearts and look around.
So far only WinME has ever crashed on MS Hearts. Plus MS Hearts is the *one* program which *always* worked on every other OS of Microsofts.

So, if you can, change the OS (nick one you're using for your other machines).

Make sure you install the graphics drivers for your chipset (GeForce4).

Cheers,

i agree and i dont agree :? .WinME is light and quick and much better imho than win98 .however its resource handling (specially ram) is terrible .but i have grown accustomed to it nad i usually do alot of reboots to keep the system fresh (but that is on my pc).

u gotta be joking  .the windows i have sometimes does crash of stupid reasons like this ,but it appears more randomly and when i try it again after a reboot it works .havent tried hearts as i am not a card game fan (i hate them infact)
So, if you can, change the OS (nick one you're using for your other machines).
all are using the same version of WinME which i installed .and as far as i can see ,none of them are making any problems except that one
Make sure you install the graphics drivers for your chipset (GeForce4).
alright,im not that lazy .i might have been lazy 2 install sound cause i know the game will still run w/o sound (and it did but crashes after a few times of loading).but i know that it wont run unless i do the vga driver installation
why not take a wav and name it null.wav to see if it works?
its impossible to play any sound file w/o sound drivers :?
try getting a program called ram booster to free up some of that ram, but it may be ur PC is just too old
got that program and i use it on my main pc .the pc is old looking from the specs but it isnt ancient history .it used to work fine on mohaa for quite along time :? :?
when did tis start happeneing? it seems as though u re-built ur comp with all that new stuff, so i would just check for a problem with MOHAA
i got the pc with same everything but i changed it by time on a very long period (over 2 years) .1st i added another 128 ram ,then i moved my 40 gb hdd to my new main comp and replaced it with an old drive i had ,i then got another 40 gb for it .i added a geforce later as my built in card started 2 not play all the new games (generals specially) ,it used to play most of the others 8-) .and everything was fine until the problems appeared .i replaced both ram chips with one 256 and still nothing
try installing it to the default directory if u dont already, and maybe take some pk3's out of main so there is less to load when u join/start games and it doesnt toll on ur resources.
errrm....i dont think reinstalling mohaa is an option as i dont have an original source of it .however it used to work fine with the version i had .
i got a new fan again and im gonna replace the data cable and c :?
edit:
oops forgot this
i have removed windows AGAIN and reinstalled it with all the drivers and directx 9.0 b and almost the latest drivers 4 the vga card .i might take flashing the bios into consideration but the power supply in the area i live in has had a few probmlems in the past few weeks so i dont dare to touch the bios now unless im sure that it wont f%@k me up if u know what i mean

im also afraid 2 install xp on such an unstable system .i want it 2 get stable 1st b4 installing
this pc was once my main (a long while ago) and it did have both winme and xp and was very stable

Corrupt JPEG data: 66 extraneous bytes before marker 0x88
There's a corrupt jpg file in whatever map that is.

This information is notifying you that the .jpg fileformat is incorrect (i.e. it's corrupt).

Which image it is I wouldn't have a clue.

Try downloading that map again and see if it works.
