well,i would've loved to join .but my midterm exams have begun a few days ago .and i dont think i'd be having much time   .
but i was just wondering about a few things .

1-what prevents some1 from starting on a certain "project" b4 the deadline .i mean b4 the competition actually starts .(no ,im not giving ideas 2 any1) .this way ,he would be having an unfair advantage over ppl that started at the "normal" time of the contest .

2-what aout another side score .not official ,and not the judges scor .but tis the general public's rating .like say a certain prefab gets 87% score from judges and 95% from the members of this forum .that would give who ever will use this prefab ,a clear opinion about the prefab

hmm!!!i forgot the others but if i remember ,ill surely post .

responses responses....

Post by lizardkid »

okay, since it looks like people are interested, im pmming Blue about cutting back the deadline and official unofficial starting today.

but, since he's at school right now for the whole day, he won't be able to respond until he gets back and can get on the comp.

so, im going rogue and knowing all of you want to start so im saying yes, you can start today. if Blue finds an objection to me i say oops, ok, and will post again to let everyone know.

M&M, one word to stop everyone from getting a head start. honor. besides, when they send the prefab to us we'll know if it was started before the deadline, there's a time-started, and time-last-modified you can see on any file. it's tough to change too. we'll probably jsut throw that one out and mark the sender and post that he/she cheated.

you could make a golfing bridge, with the small surroundings being a golf course, but dont spend too much time with the surroundings, we're going to be looking at the bridge when we judge.

and yes, the bridge can be the whole map, but keep in mind your speed in mapping and how long a week is. i personally doubt anyone could map a decent bridge in that time.

if i'm misunderstanding you and saying you don't want to do the surroundings, that's kind of iffy. if you could just place an extra brush and texture at the bottom at the end that's fine.

and the way we'll get the bridges prefabs will be via email im guessing. once we know how many people have entered for sure we'll assign judges their people (unless they request one...)

whew, i think that's everything. if Blue doesn't mind the contest will end next Wednsday.

thanx for posting and entering everyone!!! glad this is going so well.

What if there is moving pieces and sounds like t|turude said. Then we would have to make it a .map right? Can we do that?

yes.

notice we have scripting on the scoring catagory so yes, you can make it move and such. just mkae sure you post a readme with it that has it's targetnames and uses and put the script with it so you can be sure all the people who download it can still use it.

a prefab is technically a part of the map itself .
u can select a certain part of ur map (a building ) and click on file from the top left corner ,then choose save as prefab
this allows u to save this certain building for use in other maps and stuff .u can use this way to save alot of repititve things u make like ladders ,models +clips ,buildings and any thing u see fit 2 make into a prefab (like a bridge)

right, you make a bridge, select the whole thing and save it as a prefab, you attatch it to an email and send it to one of our judges.

btw, prefab = prefabricated

silly

Post by tltrude »

Well, that is kind of silly. The judges are going to make maps to test the prefabs? Make the contestants provide the map! How are you going to judge lighting if no one sends a map with a skybox?

So, I think everyone should make a small (dm) test map for thier bridge (an example of how it could be used). And, a prefab of just the bridge for release.

As far as cheating goes, We should use the honor system. Not much point in cheating when there are no prizes. Also, the judges are not stupid and can tell if you use someone eleses design. It should be ok to copy the environment the bridge is displayed in from another map because only the bridge itself will be judged. However, the lighting, sounds, and script must be your own.

Nothing prevents them. Start whenever you want, just make sure its delivered in time.

You want an extra layer of un-officiality outside this un-official contest? If one contestant makes a bridge that is more popular than its judged score, its OK. The score in this competion does not say what bridge is "best", only what bridge the 4-person jury thought was the best.

tltrude wrote:Ok, so it starts today and we get till next Wednesday? Do we just post the Prefab file here? If it has moving parts, sounds, and custom textures, it will take more then just a prefab file.
For maximum judging simplicity: The bridge should be posted in a compiled multiplayer DM map inside a ( working, so it must at least contain a player_start ) PK3 that is made up of only the bridge inside a skybox. The submission should also contain the prefab in prefab format so the judges can judge the skills of the mapper in detail. Nothing more, nothing less.

OK the deadline will be around midnight tonight at 12 pm EST. So any posts or pm's after 12 my time will not be accepted.

I'm glad so many people signed up! This will be great!

Bjarne, you're right on the mark. Nothing will stop people from starting on the map before today, but that is no real big deal and I know pretty much everyone here is pretty honest, so I'm not going to worry about it.

Right forgot to mention  that it should be a DM map with a simple skybox around it. It should be pk3'd along with either the prefab file or .map source so it can be carefully inspected.

I would think, and I want the consent of the other judges before saying this, that if the entrants want they can provide the .bsp to anyone who wants it, after the judging and wants to review it and submit a score that would be OK.

Preferably you should send the pk3 with bsp and .map or prefab to all the judges via email. This way we don't need to hastle with distrubting it. I will make a list of the email's here. This post also contains the list of entrants and judges.

lizardkid, let me know and I can add your email, don't now if you want it publicized?

Yarik, let me know too

Bjrane, you can add yours in the same way I did, or let me know and I can do it.
