Spectating error that allows cheating

Post by Bjarne BZR »

A problem with most maps seem to be that if you spectate aplayer that leans into the wall, many times you will be able to see what is on the other side, and thus be able to cheat when playing a match ( OK: very seldom really that useful, but still you CAN do it ). This goes for all maps including the stock maps. It seems the MOH:AA development team added the "lean" functionality late in the games creation and introduced this error.

Does anyone have a solution for this that does not involve draping every surface of a map with player caulk to prevent a player from getting to close to the wall?

( I can show you a screen if you need it, I just dont have the strenght left in me to upload one right now, very tired  )

I know what you mean... I've also noticed in some 3rd person games sometimes the camera swings into the wall... Too bad there wasn't a 'camera' clip.

cheat

Don't play with cheaters! You can, also, change the spectate time to like one minute before the player is booted out of the game.

yes true thats what i wondered!

when you are spec you cant talk with other players in game .....so is it really a kind of cheat ?
first time i heard that , and i never noticed .....if you can post a screenshoot i souldn't deny :p, just by curiosity .

I 've seen players beeing kicked(for a long time) and even banned( yes banned when he do it everytime or everyday dont know) for spectating .

scripter as you are you could make your own script maybe to kick player that spectate too much

It is my understanding that players who are in spectate too long probably get kicked because they are wasting space that an active player could be occupying.

However, regarding the cheating aspect: The spectator could always be using a program like teamspeak to communicate to his friends what he sees on the other side of the wall. But that would be a pretty boring way to spend the match unless you've already been killed in an objective game.

You could banish spectators from chatting.

Well, I'm not talking about public server play, I'm talking clan-war play where 2 teams are as a rule using voice communication an noone is allowed to enter pure spectator mode, but do spectate thwir own team when thy are dead.

Maby I should clarify why I ask: I'm fixing up the objective maps "The Canal", ""Pipeline" & "Stalngrad1943" for a league. And extensive testing has shown that this is a cheat possibility, due to the combination of team spectating and voice comm.
But it is, on the other hand, also possible in stock maps... so maby we are overly paranoid ( No such thing! ).

You are getting a bit paranoid ;)

You can't do anything to prevent that unless it's a lan tournament and you have administrators.

Possible solution: Mod/patch that doesn't let anyone spectate. When someone dies, he just sees a blank screen until the round ends. If you make any progress, do share, it would be very helpful in clanmatches.

good luck with the tournament, those are great-looking maps

Unless someone knows a more general solution, this is what I'll probably do: add player clips to prevent players leaning into the wall in just a few key areas, like just by the objectives.

That would probably be the best bet. Just copy the existing wall and extend it a bit on both sides and texture with player clip.

Can't you free spectate by pressing crouch? Or is that only for dm games? :?

To the best of my knowledge, you cant "freelook" unless you are in "Spectator" mode: If you could: an objective clan-match would loose all possibility of a surprice attack.

Yes that's true I guess... though mohaa was never designed for use with sneaky tools like teamspeak

Have to disagree on that

I find that teamspeak enhances the gameplay greatly in objective matches. Though you have to rely on the players to use it decently (not give information or instructions while they're dead etc).

Trying to find a solution to that too...
1st idea: Interaction between mohaa-teamspeak. When someone dies, the teamspeak server mutes the dead player. I don't know if this is possible at all and the only way to do it is have a neutral server both for mohaa and TS, that both teams can use.
2nd idea: Don't let anyone spectate. It would be sort of boring once you die, but it sounds easier to implement.. Just leave the player staring at the sky.

If somebody can think of another solution please do share... this thing has turned out to be the greatest flaw in a lan tournament here, you can't just trust people to abide by the rules :?
