Next Competition: Underground Cave System

Post by blue60007 »

Well since lizardkid has seemed to momentarily disappeared I'm going to go ahead and start the next competition. As the title says it will be an Underground Cave System.

It can be a natural or a combination of natural and man-made cave system. There should be one large natural cavern to be the center of action and at least one natural cave. Not just one cave but several caves connected together. The cave should not just dead-end but should go up to the surface and then block off the area with some foilage (surround the aboveground area with foliage to keep the player there), and maybe add a small hut or something. What's in the cave is up to you!

This should be a small DM or TDM map, again you should zip a pk3 and a .map. The scoring will run as below.

I think you should have, oh say, 10 days to map and script (if you think that's not enough, let me know). You may enter now through midnight Sunday (GMT), then if there's enough entrants then you can start first thing Monday.

So sign up now before Sunday night!!

If you have any questions about the competition let me know!

SCORING:

let x = score in category

Texturing - x/15 (duh..)
Lighting - x/15 (duh..)
Architecture - x/20 (duh..)
Audio - bonus x/5 (sounds related to cave, amb sounds don't count)
Performance - x/15 (good fps..)
Gameplay Design - x/15
Creativity - x/10 (duh..)
Scripting - x/10 (moving items, neat effects via script, etc...)
New/Custom Components - bonus x/10 (new textures, models, tiki's etc...)

then add em up and divide by 100

As you can see, scripting is now required! :)

Ought to add an index of entrants:

Entrants (5)
  • MadMapper
  • echo_rancid
  • -[D.S.M.]-Deadeye
  • -[D.S.M.]-M00NiW00Ni
  • Micky2003
Judges (5)
  • Bjarne BZR
  • Blue60007
  • lizardkid
  • jv_map
  • tltrude

Index of dates:

Last day for applying: Midnight (GMT) Sunday May 16
First mapping day: Monday May 17
Last mapping day: Midnight (GMT) Wendsday May 26

That needs to be written better.

I will be a judge for this one, if you like. And, I think you should "put your map where your mouth is" and become a contestant--at least one time. I vote "one" week.

The cave system should have at least one "natural" chamber, and be the center of gameplay. The script should not be judged by moving parts--make movement a bonus.

Fun and Theme should be combined into "Gameplay Design".

Custom models (tiki files) should also be a small bonus (Catagory "New Entities"), but only if the contestant created it, and never used it before. Also, the "Custom" catagory should be name "New Textures".

The script should have a larger score, but contestants can get help, with threads only, from the forums--as long as they write the main script themselves.

There should be a small icon as a prize. It could say ".map contest winner, first palce", so it can be added to the loading screen of the winning map, although, loading screens are not required for the contest.

You're right, I should have said, you could have a small open area then have foliage around the area where the cave exits into the open.

OK, so myself, Tltrude, lizardkid are judges so far. Yarik and Bjarne, would you like to be judges again?

Tom, are you saying we judges should enter as well?

Good point, maybe have all of the caves meet in one large cavern.

What do you think of these scoring rules?

Texturing - x/15 (duh..)
Lighting - x/15 (duh..)
Architecture - x/20 (duh..)
Audio - bonus x/5 (sounds related to cave, amb sounds don't count)
Performance - x/15 (good fps..)
Gameplay Design - x/15
Creativity - x/10 (duh..)
Scripting - x/10 (moving items, neat effects via script, etc...)
New/Custom Components - bonus x/10 (new textures, models, tiki's etc...)

MAX TOTAL: 115/100

I really do like the 'Gameplay Design', that sums the two [Fun and theme] well. :)

About time limits, I think two weeks is still best, or maybe a week and a half. So if we start Monday May 17 (my birthday btw  ) and then end Wednesday 26?

Oh, about the little icon thing, maybe it could become their [the winner] avatar until the next competiton, or added to their sig. I think the sig would be best, so they could still keep their avatar... If the the admins don't mind we could take one of the .map avatar's and change it...

Yes, that is much better, you should edit the first post. I don't want to compete this time. I didn't say you should be a judge and a contestant, just a contestant. Ten days, or is it nine, sounds ok to me.

I can e-mail you the admin avatar in psd (photoshop) format if you want so you can easily change it... also if there's any other forum features (like usergroups, ranks) you would like to use for the mapping competitions then just e-mail or pm Bjarne or me 8-)

I also added lizardkid and blue to the comp moderators usergroup... you can now moderate this forum and you should also be able to post news in the news forum to get some more attention for the mapping competitions (but don't spam it ;))

Why should you guys do all the work and not get some fun out of it? Let someone else judge this time. Like jv_map! Come on jv, it will only take an hour or so to be a judge.

Blue60007 - please update the "trap players" thing in the first post. We need to advertise the contest on other sites. I still think the ".map first place" sticker for the loading screen is a good idea. It will give an incentive for mappers from other forums to join in on the fun!

If you guys think it is worth it, we can give the winner my "Animated Screenshot Loading Screen" as a prize, too. It can include my time to work with the winner until he is happy with it. A little help form jv-map on the winning map's script would also be a fantastic prize!

Yes, if you could email me the psp format of it, I should be able to play around with it a bit.

I see...

What do you think about adding a post in the news advertising that the competitions are now open, and provide a link to the latest competition. Also I (or lizardkid) could post the winners there too.

Tltrude, Do you mind if I use that cave picture as an advertisment?
