building sizes in comparison to static objects

Post by AOC »

HI
When I put objects like a bunkbed or a tank in my map they are a lot bigger then my buildings. Do they shrink when the map is compiled?

I built the buildings according to the view on the 3D screen, am I supposed to make the buildings "abnormally" large by the looks on the 3D screen?

I probably shouldn't make any more buildings until I know, because it would be a waste of time to build buildings that a player can't even fit into.

Klick on basic room.

Your man is 96 units high I think.
Your basic ceiling is 160 units to 200 units high.

If your ever unsure put a player/start next to your brush.

10 feet

Post by tltrude »

A normal building story is about 10 feet (on the outside), and there are 16 grid units to a foot in the game. That whould make the room 160 uints high on the outside, but on the inside you still have to add the floor and ceiling brushes.

The player is 96 units tall (six feet), but you don't want his head to scrape the ceiling. So, he needs at least 128 units of space, minimum. That would leave 2 feet (32 units), inside, for the floor and ceiling, but you don't have to use 1 foot (16 unit) brushes for them--8 uints would be fine.

I hope that helps you to understand scale, but all buildings are not alike. Some have 8 foot ceilings inside, some have 10 foot, and some even more. A warehouse might have 16 foot ceilings (256 uints). The models all default to scale 1, as do the players. You can use the info_player_start as a guide to player size while mapping.

Hope that helps!

HI Hogleg,

I watched the basic room tutorial, and it was really good, the person that did the tutorial was very descriptive, I'll probably have to go back and watch it a few times

Everything is cleared up,

I'll probably start a new map, I don't want to have to resize everything, I got the basic design I want.

Thanks Hogleg

also when in doubt, but a player start, thats fit to the player so u can get the size right.
some other units to remember:
max jump height: 72
player crouch height: 64
max jump distance: 128
max stair height: 16
minimum stair width: 16

i think all those are right, someone correct me if im wrong.
