Terrain Help Please.

Post by Kate »

Hi Everyone,

I am totally new to mapping and have read the tutorials. I now know how to do ladders, windows, doors etc, etc. I can make buildings without using csg subtract or hollow. So I decided now was time to start my 1st proper map.

I read that roads are 256 units wide? However LOD terrain makes grids of 512x512 so how do you make a 256 road on a 512 grid? do you make all your buildings 1st then place the streets in using LOD? or do you make one big LOD terrain and put your buildings on that? if it is that latter how do you do that if the terrain is uneven? or would it be better to make the buildings then use patch mesh to make the streets? maybe it is because I am just a girl stepping into the male dominated map world but I am confused. I hope your not as confused as me by my question.

Thanks - Kate

Hi Kate.
You should use patch mesh to create your road.
The correct tutorial for this is at /t.php?id=87

Making nice looking LOD Terrain is almost an artform, and takes some practice before you get good at it--there is a tutorial in MOHAATools/docs. Curving roads are normally added with simple patch mesh. But, for streight/level city streets, normal brushes will be fine.

Wacko's recycle bin has an empty map (mp_ml40) you can use, or study. It already has lod terrain and roads. http://www.decalattack.com/recyclebin/s ... ames.shtml (click on Maps)
The .map file is in the pk3, and you can unzip it by changing the name to "mp_m4l0.zip".

It also already has a simple team deathmath script, and player spawn points. So, all you really need is to add are some buildings and models.

Thanks for the quick response to my question. That was a great help :D

If I get stuck again (which I more than likely will) I will be back hehe.

Thanks - kate

Roads don't necessarily have to be 256, they can be any size you want, that's just an average road. That's a 16 foot wide road, if you wanted to make an express way, you'd have to go much wider, or a simple trail, you'd have to go smaller...

I think I can honestly say you're the first girl mapper I've seen, welcome aboard! :D

I made a generous bathroom in the map "Vemork Factory", I think the source is still in the MOHAA recycling bin ( Dont remember the URL... google is your friend ;) ).

It's great to have women here at last, these guys may become a bit less "rough" in their posts with you around :)

Now shape up lads! ( Just kidding, you guys mostly behave very well ).
