Why? WHY? WHY!?

Post by [KreatoR] »

Why? WHY? WHY wont my trenches work right damnit!?

ok, I have a line of zig-zaging trenches that have these weird invisible walls in them and I dont know why they are there... the trench line kind of bends like this (top view):

\__/'''''\__/ ...and so on

the parts that are horizontal are fine, but when you walk through the diagonal parts you get stopped by this invisible wall (but you can duck under it and squeeze through one side).

Here is a BSP file of a piece of the trench, please take a look, walk through it... youll see!

Thnx!

I think I would have to look at the '.map' file to tell you. I did downlod the '.bsp', the trench must have some custom textures. Not that this is the problem, I just didn't see any textures.

It appears that there is a brush covering that entire piece of your trench.
When you duck and walk in that piece, you can't stand up at all over the entire lenght...

Are you shure that there is no brush covering that piece of the trench?

Like Innkeeper said, post the .map file, much easier to look at!

lol that happened to me a few months ago on one of my old maps i couldnt figure it out either. So what i finally did was in radient i just put a giant peice of caulk over the area and hit the cutting button and the prob just went away. Whatever was there i couldnt see in radient...like invisible lol

lol oniel  ... im sure its not too good for the fps doing that (cosidering a have a whole series of trenches that are doing this), but i will if i have to.

ok, ill post the .map file, but one thing i might add. when I change the shape of the trenches the invisible walls change too... :? I want them to look like this (side view):

--^._.^-- (the ^'s are the parapets, and walls are slightly slanted)

then i changed them to this:

''''|__|''''' (no parapets. and walls are straight 90 degrees)

and when i made them like that, the invisible walls were just barely there anymore.

anyway, Heres the .map file ...and i took out my custom textures for you.

thnx

the hills? ...what hills? the parapets? they are just little bumps (like a speed bump) that goes all the way along the brim of the trench.

If you want a better look, i posted the .bsp file of it and a .map of it in my last posts.

ok i just looked at it i also compiled to get an idea of the exact spot. I see where it is youre talking about. I went into radient and tried selecting a few pieces i noticed you didnt use LOD terrian for this. Im just sort of curious why not. It seems like it would be easier to make trenches. In my Crossfire map i made trenches that way. So when you put these peices together i would imagine you were cutting or mitering your walls so you didnt have textures shoved through one another so i was thinking maybe a peice was lose but i dont see a darn thing...its like its invisible. Personally i think LOD terrain might be the better way to go. Thats weird man

ya, but isnt there a limit to how much LOD you can use? Cause I plan to use a lot of it already... :?

a limit? whoa i never heard of that. Im using such a large amount of LOD terrain righth now in my NAM map. Lots of forest. I dont know ive never heard of a limit...i sure hope not but the amount of terrain ive used so far is equal to the size of about lil more than half the size of omaha and im still going with no lag or framerate probs so i dunno. Ive been using my sisters puter after i compile it on my puter because she has a very slow 500 mhz puter so if no lag there then i know im good. I only suggested it because LOD terrain is so convienient and it looks sooo realistic.

LOD terrain can only reach to a certain height. When you see yellow dots, means that the terrain has exceeded its limits.

I'm at work so I could not compile and test it in game. I opened it and could not see anything mysterious in the map file. Have you selected all the brushes and aligned them to the grid (just an idea). Also noticed that you haven't used any caulk. Use the texture common "caulk" on all sides of the terrain brushes that never will be seen by the player.

About the lod terrain thing! To much lod in the map will reduce preformance! At least if all of the terrain is visible and drawn all the time. A lod piece creates many triangles for the engine to draw. Make a test map and put two different lod pieces in it (not connected). Leave one of the flat, and twist and bend the other one. Enter the map in game and write "r_showtris 2" (without quotes) in the console. You will see the triangles, and the difference when you start twisting it.
