Jumpy map problem (MP DM)

Post by pdxhawk »

I created a MP map for DM games. This map is really jumpy for people other than the server. The standard maps work fine and don't jump, nor do other maps I've downloaded. Any help in fixing this or ideas as to why this happens would be appreciated. Thanks!

sounds like your fps is down the drain. first thing i would check is the Vis. did you put in good leafgroups? areaportals?

next i'd check overlapping brushes and textures, that'll bring fps down in a hurry. fix those as well.

caulk the back of the brushes you're not using so that you don't have more texture drawing than need be.

If the map performs well on your PC and only exhibits this behavior when running on a server, it is because there is too much data the server must keep track of. Scripting can induce considerable overhead, but it is usually noticable when testing the map alone. However, if the script is capturing data that must be sent to the client (scores, timers, etc.), that is server overhead. It is most likely too many entities (models). Server has to keep track of all of them.

If it's a Spearhead map, server overhead is severe due to the rather poor algorithms used to determine what players are visible.

Thanks for the tips. It's probably a combination of some of those things, so I'll see what I can do.
