PK3 inside PK3?
i have too many maps that are usually played on the lan .so on a whim i decided to pack'em all into one pk3 .so i extracted all thier contents and into one folder then zipped it and changed it back to .pk3 and it worked fine and was very handy when distributing /handling it .
however ,now i want to remove a few maps but they are all in one big mess ,id have to fish out every texture / bsp /sound .... and remove it .
so i am thinking of making a new big pk3 with the ones i want in it which is failry simple .
however ,is it possible to pack the pk3 file itself into another pk3 file ?
that way it would be easier for handling if i want to remove something else in the future .and add something in its place .
since a pk3 is a smaller version of the MAIN folder ,then i dont think it would pose as a problem .
i cant try that atm because im on another pc .
so any1 knows?

ok ,gonna look it up . but the main advantage of a 1 file is that i can distribute all the maps quite easily on my other pcs in the lan .or add them /remove them when ever i want .however the main disadvantage is the all or nothing method .
if i use a pk3 manager ,then i have to sit on each pc and do it manually ,instead of just controlling the whole operation from one pc

hmm good point ,i can do extracts form one pc onto the others .but if i want to remove them i have to select every single one
.
with one folder it was only a click away (well ,actually 2
)
i used google to look for that thing and it turned up with 3 french sites !!
2 were completely confusing ,but i managed to find bigkisscool in the last one .however the link was broken
.
i think im gonna do it manually though

that wasnt my point ,doesnt it use the cable's and router to transfer data?Dont think that is a problem, as they execute on the local machine.
so more pcs =more data =less room for multiplayer data
i was asking if mohaa will be able to read it ,i know its possibleDon't see why you can't, you can put a zip inside a zip.
yes ,it didnt workYou can put a zip in a zip but you won't be getting any more compresion in fact the file will be a bit bigger then all the individual zips combined because of the unzipping information added . I don't think mohaa will read 2 pk3 levels deep though .

pk3's are best done for one map... but was curious... do you use the same folder name for textures on every map?however ,now i want to remove a few maps but they are all in one big mess ,id have to fish out every texture / bsp /sound .... and remove it
For custom textures in a map, I put the files in textures/mapname folder, so even if they did get zipped up with something else.... the folders are always map specific. I dont do that with custom sounds cause i dont use all that many, but you can do the same thing for those. The rest of the stuff is usualy named pretty obviously and not hard to sort =p

yeah ,i just extracted allthe pk3s in one folder .zipped it and changed the extension to pk3 .and voila ,i have a group pk3 for alot of maps... but was curious... do you use the same folder name for textures on every
dont they slow down the loading ? the primary reason is to improve loading speed .Never mind the scripts and textures and stuff....
so texxtures (mainly) scripts and other stuff increase the overall size which in turns slows down the access time
