Well if you have 80 rungs and make either the faces that are connected to the rails nodraw or caulk you would see only 320 at a time, 240 even if you can't see the back when it's resting on a wall.

Your math is sort of off... a rectangular brush has 6 sides, 12 triangles. I was assuming the ends could not be seen, hence 4 sides (8 triangles per rung). At best you can reduce it to 480 (3 sides, 6 triangles). Of course, that doesn't count the sides of the ladder which would add another 320 triangles (at minimum). I suppose you could leave a gap at the ends of each rung, but that might be noticable.

Maybe you have face count to spare, so it's all academic. I know I never have any to waste.

Well you could be right but i'm not sure if the engine calculates quads into triangles.
I tested this before with some other game with the same engine but the polycount did'nt match so i wondered if it just stays quadrant.

It depends on the area where the ladder is in i guess, if it is a detailed room then reduce it otherwise it does'nt matter i guess.

Try splitting the ladder in two pieces, make an intermediate level and don't put the 2 pieces one just above of the other... just an idea...
The ladder was for (again..) testing purposes. it is not going to be in the map.
I think ladders look better if the rungs are not as wide as the rails. I see a lot of noob ladders that have 8 unit rails and 8 unit rungs--the texture is always off too, ha ha. Those ladders look bad in the game. Just think how hard it would be to climb a ladder with fat rails and rungs!
Agreed. They do look n00bish. Hmm, i believe i had 8x8 posts with 4x4 rungs which were equally placed in the middle. (it might even be 4x4 posts with 2x2 rungs...)

REPEAT:
I created a ladder 2552 units high (for testing purposes.)...
