'History' Questions

Post by Cheetohs »

Ok, for a class of mine, my teacher assembled some questions that she made or found.. not quite sure. But im really curious as to what you think on some of them (I already finished the packet.. so ya..)

What is the only man-made structure visible to the naked eye from the moon?

Well, most people would say Great wall. I highly doubt that. I did a quick search and didnt find one picture as proof. And plus, from the color of the wall, the Height and width of it... It's impossible. "BUT CHEETOHS, ITS THE LONGEST MAN-MADE STRUCTURE IN THE WORLD!!!1!1" Actually, I believe i read somewhere that some Australian Dingo fence was the longest structure... but that is kind of bending the rules :P.. But still, i dont think length would matter in this case. Think of a piece of hair, put it up against a wall, even a white wall, and the sucker would be nearly impossible to see from 20 feet. maybe.. i guess, who knows? To be a jackass, i put "Satellite".

Who was the first woman killed in WWII?

Impossible to answer. I believe she meant american, so i put Marion Crandell.... Who knows?

Eh, i think there is more questions but ill wait off on em. :P

actually i dont belive any EArth-anchored structure is visible from the moon, maybe i'm wrong but i dont think there IS one. closest to it would be the Sears (or is it Chrysler) buildings that go above the clouds. even then they'd be pinpicks inside pinpricks inside pinpricks from the moon.

She may be confused and mixed up the terms "visible from space" with "visible from the moon"...

But the moon lander is a man made structure and its base is still on the moon... so it should be visible

The Chinese authorities have moved swiftly to airbrush from history the popular myth that the Great Wall is visible from space.

Schools textbooks face immediate revision after the country's first astronaut confirmed that - after 21 hours in orbit - he had been unable to spot the monumental structure.

Can You See The Great Wall of China from The Moon?

For some reason, some urban legends tend to get stated and never disappear. This legend even appears as a erroneous Trivial Pursuit question. The legend? Many are familiar with the claim that the Great Wall of China is the only man-made object visible from space or from the moon with the naked eye. This is simply not true.

From a low orbit of the earth, many artificial objects are visible on the earth, such as highways, ships in the sea, railroads, cities, fields of crops, and even some individual buildings. While at a low orbit, the Great Wall of China can certainly be seen from space but it is not unique in that regard.

However, when leaving the earth's orbit and acquiring an altitude of more than a few thousand miles, no man-made objects are visible at all. NASA says, "The Great Wall can barely be seen from the Shuttle, so it would not be possible to see it from the Moon with the naked eye." Thus, it'd be tough to spot the Great Wall of China or any other object from the moon. Furthermore, from the moon, even the continents are barely visible

Its like taking a very long piece of hair and putting it against the wall, going 50 ft (probably more to be accurate!) from it and trying to see it... Impossible.
