Caulk??

Post by Guest »

I now for constructions you always need to apply the caulk texture, but is that ok for example if i make a simple wall and i use the caulk textures and i just put textures on the side of the wall so there is only in the middle of the wall caulk textures?

The reason that it is suggested to use caulk is because once you create a structure you can come back and texture only those surfaces that will be seen. Then you wont have to worry if the hidden surfaces have a texture other than caulk. This also implies, I guess, that it is best to create your entire structure before texturing the surfaces. Having all the nonvisable surfaces textured with caulk prevents the engine from rendering them saving horsepower.

Yes, that's the best you can do.

Brush-surfaces that can't be seen at a map should always have the Caulk texture.
Since that texture doesn't need to be calculated (it is drawn but it's pure grey) and pushes up the FPS.

Why don't you register?

Colli you're using blank_lightmap. Use common/caulk instead. Caulk isn't drawn at all.

You can never see caulk in game.

Both caulk and blank_lightmap have green / purple tiles in the editor.

Well it just draws the lightmap without any texture. Don't use it I'd say :? .

I took a screenshot from MoHRadiant where i loaded the same map as the previous screenshots...

So, is this the correct "Caulk" i'm using?

No you are using blank lightmap - above every texture in the texture window is hte name of the texture - I can just about make out the blank_lightmap in your pic. Both blank_lightmap and caulk look exactly the same in the editor.....

Well, i know it is hard to see in the shot, but i followed the ToS (Terms of Service???) and made the pic 600 width

AND, you are both correct
It is indeed "Blank Lightmap"

I found the Caulk, further below in the common section.

My question:
If you use Caulk for non visible sides of the brush, where does one need to use "Caulk Shadow" and "Caulk Sky"?

Still, thanks jv_map and Surgeon for pointing this out to me!!!!!!!!!

Use caulkshadow to make static models cast shadows without running a -staticshadows light compile.

Use caulksky as an alternate skybox texture. It will color your sky with the farplane color. To get an idea how a map with caulksky would look, type r_fastsky 1 in the console.

jv_map, that doesn't do anything in my map :?
Is there something i need to set first before it does anything?

Also, typing "cg_drawfps 1" does nothing, while it should bring up the frame rate :?

Fastsky only has effect if you have a skybox.

Use 'fps 1' to see the framerate.

I talked to one of the guys who worked on moh:aa and he said there isnt much of a difference with using no draw instead of caulk except that no draw made the visdata go way down for me.
