State of the Forums

Post by jv_map »

Hi all

More than likely you'll all already have noticed the horrible state the forums are in at the moment :(, which is about the state I found em in this morning.

Much worse than that the ordering of the forums got kinda sucky is the fact that the Mapping and News forums have disappeared without trace. They are not just hidden, I couldn't find them anywhere in the database either.

Sad thing is I actually tried to make a backup yesterday evening but got a corrupted file :? so decided to try again this morning... too late :(

I haven't got a clue what exactly happened to the forums... I don't think we're hacked because only some forums have been removed... rather seems like someone mistakenly pressed the wrong button at the wrong time.

Anyway I mailed Gamespy tech support asking if they have any recent backup which can be used to restore the forums to their original state. At the moment I'm sorry to say you can only use this emergency forum, the other forums are read-only until further notice.

My deepest apology for the inconvience and this terrible event :( . I would have hoped to have a nicer Christmas message but hopefully the days ahead will tell how much can still be saved.

Thanks for hanging on - rest assured .Map staff will do anything to resolve this situation asap.

There was alot of good info in the aa map forum which all of us must of learnt something new, maybe we (anyone who can share knowlegde) could work on some new tutorials to add to the main tutorials pages, as some of the current tuturials point to the forum.

Wouldn't it be great if the site had 100% complete tutorials with all aspects. from clauking to advance brush work?

Any way keep up the good work .map this site has been really important for developing my mapping skills etc and i hope it continues

Merry Xmas all and a happy new year.

cheers 5

I do know that Gamespy have tampered with the database because of an attack a few days ago - unfortunately my last db backup is much older than JV's one - its something I have neglected in a bad way, for which i can only apologise.....

Even if there were 20 other mapping/scripting forums...I'd still wait for this one to come back to life! I started out mapping without a clue in the world (well still have no clue on some aspects), but it's the prompt replies and good guys/gals that make mapping fun the way it should be! Heck, i have fun goin thru the mapping forum and testing out each thing i learn...just 2 weeks ago I had only 2 test maps started, but with all the new information I have learned from here, i've got about 13 maps, each with different stuff i learned...anyways sorry for the rambling, but it just goes to say that "This forum rocks" and the staff is amazing!

Cheers!

just like mapping without auto save on... one too many times you do a bad vertice maybe or a csg subtract or benfding a brush the wrong way when BOOM! you get hit with a RADIANT MFC APPLICATION HAS PEFORMED AN ILLEGAL OPERATION
ya gotta save it every so often or when you get warning signs or before you do a major upade.... anyway, it happens to the best of us...

Man, I sure hope that something will be recovered.

But, it's not as bad as things sound, I suppose. With the new year approaching fast, we now have an opportunity to make a fresh start and create an even better set of forums.

I hope you all have a happy holiday!

I woudn't have minded if it had been, say any other forum - but the MAPPING one !!!! Theres around 2 years worth of info there .. there is a bright ray of hope in that JV has at least one back up - its from a few months ago and would mean we would only loose a smaller portion .. this problem is going to have to wait until we receive some sort of reply from Gamespy.......
