Ummm I don't really know how to explain how to do it. Anyway I'll try, and explain it the best I can. Ok the easiest way to do it is get the thickness of the brush you want for the roof. Then hit "E" on your keyboard and there should be small blue dots at each of the corners of your brush. From the sideview of your roof, click and drag the top dot up to where you want the peak of the roof to be. Then go down and drag the bottom dot up so that it is the same distance from the top dot that it was before you started editting the brush. I hope this helped, and I hope I didn't confuse you any.

I made some screenies :P

There are different ways to make roofs, I would like to show you this way:

Image
Make a simple brush ..duh

Image
Then rotate the brush like this, by pressing R.

Image
Then you can copy and paste the brush by pressing the spacebar, or ctrl + c / ctrl + v

Image
Put the 2 top sides together, then you can clip the brushes, so it will fit (press X) use the 2 bleu dots (first click at you screen make the 1st bleu dot and then click again for the 2nd bleu dot), then select a dot and play a bit untill you will get something like at the screenshot.
(dont forget to clip the other brush)

Image
How about this :idea:

Yeah, also sometimes I'll make a vertical brush then drag the verticies ('v') to get an angle like that. Also sometimes I'll use the clipper and clip the roof out of a big square with the right height, width, etc of the roof...

I almsot alyways use clipping, makes it easier to make a roof with different angles. Plus it makes intersecting T shaped roofs easier.

roof

Post by tltrude »

Make your roof a solid brush (cut the angles) then use csg hollow. That way, you will have eves that fit perfect. You will still need to cut off or subtract the overlaps.

Another way is to make a flat brush and hold Ctrl while dragging one edge upwards. Then copy it (spacebar) and do Selection > Flip X, or whatever, to the copy. Try to make the dragged corners land on the grid lines. But, if they are slightly off, use Selection > Snap Points To Grid.

T shape

Post by tltrude »

By "T" shaped, I think he means looking down from the top. You have to cut off where the two inverted V roof tops overlap. If it were me, I would use CSG subtract for that.

       *    *
       *    *
********    *
*           *

********    *
       *    *

OK gotcha now! :D CSG would only work if the roof area was one solid brush. If it was hollow you would have to clip it by hand.

Remember to put facia texture on the faCIA. Too many times guys tile a roof and the tile wraps around a facia and look horrible, put some tyimber along there or something.
