Does everyone hate MS?
Is it because they have not had an original idea ever!
Windows- Stolen from Steve Jobs.
Money- Stolen from Lotus123
IE- Stolen from Netscape
MSN Search- Stolen from Google
The only thing that wasn't stolen was DOS and Gates bought that.
Just wondering if thats why their hated so much?[/quote]

You wouldn't. Grab a Mozilla Suite.
I hate M$ because of their greed and the lack of proffesionalism and security. People say that they prefer to pay for software and get 'guaranteed tech support'. I'm pretty sure you know why M$ tech support has become so legendary.
Open-source projects don't give any warranty, but in most cases the community helps you out in solving your problems in a very short time, whereas you can never be sure how long will you wait for a solution from M$ or if you'll get it at all.
Security - everyone knows it. Each and every time a bug in M$ products is being discovered, an exploit is ready within a few days, but if you want to patch your M$ crap, you have to wait at least until the next security bulletin, which is probably going to be released the next month. And you are just hoping that they'll find and fix the bug on time. Open-source software bugfixes are usually ready a few hours after the discovery.
Lack of proffesionalism - there recently was an issue with word and excel 2003's document encryption, which was caused by a very silly mistake of the programmers. Don't remember the details, search the web if you want to know more.
As to buying DOS - there was some dirty business in it, too. M$ sold MS-DOS to IBM when they didn't have it yet. They bought QDOS (quick and dirty operating system) from some Seattle company after signing the contract with IBM, made cosmetic changes and renamed it to MS-DOS.

i dont really see how u can consider IE "stolen" from netscape or msn search "stolen" from google. it just their version of it. personally im with lizard kid, i like their stuff, i sue their stuff, and its really only stupid ppl who get viruses anyway. get firewall.
sp2 was by no means the worst thing that happen to windows. it was called beta for a reason.

There are only 10 kinds of people in this world; those who know what binary is, and those who don't.
They see a better product that people are gravatating towards and if its not theirs, they simple copy it and mod it and call it "their own version".kai0ty wrote:i dont really see how u can consider IE "stolen" from netscape or msn search "stolen" from google. it just their version of it. personally im with lizard kid, i like their stuff, i sue their stuff, and its really only stupid ppl who get viruses anyway. get firewall.

And worse is if it is theirs allready they don't spend dev money to improve secure etc.

Sure, MS products are useful. But would you like and use them if you actually paid for them? Software piracy is so widespread in that area, and if my computer wasent pre installed with windows and I had to get an operating system myself: I would probably use one of the open source OS:es instead. Currently there is only one thing keeping me from going that way: games.
Today, a gamer must have a Windows PC to play the coolest games.
Before: these OS:es were a pain in the butt to install and maintain... today, this is no longer so.
Today, MS can use the fact that they are dominating the market to... keep dominating the market... and they would be a stupid company not to take advantage of that domination.
And say what you will, but MS has not become a huge corporation by beeeing stupid. They have become huge corporation by giving people a friendlier interface to something very technical.

i think people are stuck in the past where MS was a bad company with even buggier products and DOS was still the way to go. Windows has EXTREME popularity, usability, features, everything. open-source are going to suck in comparison because they had no goal in mind, a bunch of people from around the globe put in features and there you go, a new OS.
but tell me this, what's wrong with Windows, IE, Excel, the recycle bin, or MSN messenger? people say they suck, i've never seen beter programs. is it just because it's a MS product and for some reason they cant handle it?

@hogleg: No we hate MS because of the crappy/buggy products. Not because their ideas weren't original.
@Rookie One: Greed is ok with me. It is the lack of quality in their products that I am sick of. Of course, no one is forcing to use MS, you make that choice yourself. You have every right to swith to an apple or a linux/unix based os.
@kai0ty: You are right, it isn't stolen it is called "Lack of inginuity." And this is how capitalism works. If one person comes up with a better product then the other, the go for it.
MS, didn't "steal" google to make MSN, they just started with the same idea heading in a bit of a different direction. So please stop bitching, competition is good for the consumer.
@hogleg: They copied it in the sense of "idea" not the original product. MSN, is NOT a copy of google by any means. It is meerly the same idea.
Besides, what gives good the right to have the only good search engine? Nothing! This is capitalism, and MS is just trying to capitalize in the search engine market too, nothing wrong with that.
@Bjarne BZR: lol, don't blame the "stupid" companies. It is the person who makes this decision believe it or not. If people start all of a suddent switching to linux, game companies would be scrambling to make games for that particular OS. But as it stands no one wants to leave Windows because many users are average. And they don't are about the small details.
@Master-Of-Fungus-Foo-D: you are not very knowledgeble in this market are you?
No offense of course.
A monopoly ONLY EXISTS WITH THE GOVERNMENTS HELP. Any monopoly out there in the US is created by laws and "features" that allow it to become a monopoly. Try and sell energy in your city, and you will get thrown into jail faster then you can say "Damn."
Your town has 1 energy source, and if you try to intervene in that market you will get busted by the government. So who is making it a monopoly? The government.
... In a free society a monopoly cannot exist by its nature and virtue. Lets take a look why...
When a company is the sole provider of said product i.e. "moon" rocks, it has the right to charge what ever price it wants. Now, if it starts charging too high a price, other people see this and are attracted by the oppurtinuty to the large profit at a high price. Thus creating competition thus lowering the prices to the market equilibrium.
-Take a look at the Cranberry industry in 1998 in the US. A barrel of cranberys cost around $80. When people saw this price gouching, TONS and TONS of business's opened to make that profit, and in one year the price went down from $80 to around $8 a barrel due to competition.
-Take a look at the Napa Valley Wine region (in California, USA). It was making a ton of money of wine sales because there were only 1 or 2 growers, but in 2 years the prices came down about 200% due to competition between more growers and producers.
-Master-Of-Fungus-Foo-D, a monopoly only exists with government help. When the Gov grants a special privelages to some companies which cannot be achieved that the free market, it is creating a monopoly.
Here is a tip, try to start your own water business in your town i.e. pumping water, cleaning it and taking it to people homes through pipes, you will be fined and possibly jailed. Why? because the government granted that right to another company. And you have no right to get into the market, thus that 1 company becomes a monopoly.
@Rookie One: Their prices aren't low, or high for that matter. They are at the market equilibrium. If you are willing to pay $100 for XP, then MS has no problem selling it to you at that price.
Note this isn't a fight for MS, rather a fight for capitalism.

In fact, yes, you do! You've got to pay for w!ndoze first to use them legally. Or even practically - what's the use of this when you've got no w!ndoze? Um, well, if you've got WINE or another 'alternative W32 API implementation'...Green Beret wrote:umm, well do you have to pay for msn?do u have to pay for IE?do u have to pay for outlook?plus newly released is there very own Anti Spyware software
Are you subscribed to Bugtraq? I guess not. Well, I am, and this M$ anti-spyware has been commented on as soon as it came out. I watched the discussion and people complained that it mistakes things like VPN services or content watching software - Netnanny etc. (Green Beret wrote:in my opinion is the best one made so far.it has found entries for spyware that adaware and search and destroy and hijackthis couldnt find.

Apart from that, there's one more thing. Do you really think that M$ documented all of w!ndoze's 'features'? Sure they didn't. There are some tricks they are the only ones that know about. That's probably why it seems to work better.
