How do you do this, cliff wall with a neat clean cap on the top (the path) not lod - what feature is used to create this?

That is most likely brushes with some clever choice of textures. Learn to use the 3-point clipping tool and brush work like that will be a lot easier.

Looks too blocky for patch meshes, but it may very well be a combination of patch and brush. Hard to see from one picture.

i remember looking at the .map file for that Clifftop map...i got the map file from Wacko's MOhaa Recycling Bin...itake a look at it there...i believe it was patch meshes that were used...
