MS
what is it with people and bashing MS?
it's programs are fine, (Excel and Publisher namely) Windows is universally used and has lots of really nice features (and it isnt that vulnerable if you know anything about security)
just because it's a rich company doesn't mean its evil :S
and Firefox, why not IE? what is so wrong with good programs that come packaged?

i wasnt bashing MS... i just saw a funny image and posted it?
Firefox is way beter than IE! Less ads, less spyware, most viruses makers, i think, target IE....
(they make pretty good games... iguess thw wotrld would stop if ms just suddenly vanished too
)
hey hogleg, how much can i buy that computer for today? 5-10 cents?

That's interesting... wait until firefox gets more users and attention...Master-Of-Fungus-Foo-D wrote: Firefox is way beter than IE! Less ads, less spyware, most viruses makers, i think, target IE....

Think about it: you make viruses, who will you target to make the most damage? The one with only +/- 10% of market share or the one with the most users? Linux that has hundred different versions and kernel versions, Mac or Windows? You won't waste your time making something to attack a minimal percentage of users, virus makers think big, though big is a big word for what they do...
As lizardkid said, if you know about security and don't click OK everytime you see a messagebox just to see it disappear...
Many users don't even know there is a "tools->options" dialog box to disable "potentially dangerous" settings and then complain they get viruses/spyware and say: "i didn't do anything"...exactly, even setting options to a safer level. Many of these are set in place to be commonly used by "good" programmers. It's sure, if you decide to go on wa**z sites with IE, it's calling for troubles. But most users of IE are mr.everybody and aunt jemima who don't know a thing about computers, don't got search for the latest cr**ks of some cool program they want to tryout and use what comes bundled, that's why those "potentially risky" settings are set as they are. Instead of bitching, why peopleare not proposing a "security settings wizard" for beginners to MS? As yuou may know, there two (or more) ways to look at a "problem":
- only bitch and don't propose solutions
- propose solutions to solve it.
Instead of bitching, why not proposing a "security settings wizard" for beginners to MS? You know they can be contacted and are waiting for feedback. MS is one of the companies that are making all the efforts to try and stop all the mess caused by spywares and viruses. Knew that?
Firefox better than IE? ok, learn to design webpage, not with a visual editor, but with code, then come back and tell that again. You'll make sure 10% users can see your page display correctly and lose the other part because the layout is all fuc** up? yeah... right.
To be honest, i use both, each for it's own use: IE for common sites and boards, Firefox when i'm not sure about the site. But most of all, i used my brain when surfing the web, and i never got any spyware/viruses install from Internet yet. (touching wood)
Some people say Linux will come strong someday, yeah, it makes me laugh to hear that... try to install a single program to 5 different computers with different linux distributions without a glitch...
I installed redhat 2 years ago and subscribed to the "security bulletin". Received security holes warnings almost every 5 days to update this or that because some users could and blablabla... safer than windows?
And... think about it, where would Internet/computers be if MS didn't show up at all? They brought it to everyone and demistified this world. I could go on and on about how Microsoft is not an "evil" company as many users say, but i'll get incoherent answers with poor argumentations on how i'm wrong. Navigate in MS site and read about what they do for the computer world, which otehr company can say they do as much?

wasn't just you...i wasnt bashing MS... i just saw a funny image and posted it?
nicely worded Doggie... about what i was thinking.
i just see a lot of freeware junkies (junkies in this sense meaning they use/have a lot of it, NOT that they are junky because of it) who load up of Firefox, Linux, a bunch of illegally downloaded games and the like and profess that that is the best way...
Windows has plenty of security! SP2 comes with all the firewall virus scan etc... and it's not that hard to go out and buy McAfee Suite, they update easily and fast, Windows updates do pretty much the same..
i go on the Web every day and i have 0 viruses, i use IE and Windows. supposedly the most vulnerable. anything suspicious i get, i trash. i do a spyware check every week, so far so good :S
but i'm just me... i guess IE really is bad and windows is an OS designed to make me think i'm safe. and that Bill Gates is an "evildoer" who steers me to wrong!
lol jk but i really, can't, see any advantages of Firefox over IE, and i've never used Linux but i just cannot imagine an OS with no real, teamwork in it, just random people adding on however they want... it just doesn't appeal to me

Yes, I am a Linux user, and I'm proud of it.Deutsche Dogge wrote:I see, the penguin tells all...Rookie One.pl {sfx} wrote:Eeek...No comment...
No comment is a common response from Linux users, simple, there is no real argument to back them...![]()
Linux is no safer, it's just less targeted... period.
There are very strong arguments, I'm just not good at arguing.
Linux IS safer. There's no comparison. For instance, in w!ndoze executables are distinguished by the .exe extension. Every file that has this extension can be executed, no matter whether you want it to or not.
*nixes need a +x file attribute to mark the file as executable. The file attributes need to be set by the user. Do the math.

nope, +x have to be set by user (or be an effect of a bug in third-part software). new files (created/downloaded/etc) don't have +x set by defaultlizardkid wrote:then my math sees that any virus maker can just add on the +x attribute and distribute.
1) it's bugs are known and used by too many virus-makers. that's the reason why I advise people to use something elsewhy not IE? what is so wrong with good programs that come packaged?
2) FF/Opera are much more comfortable. that's why I don't use IE.
1) Tabs allow to have all webpages in one window. good thing when you have 15 applications launched to do your work and 20 google-search in web browserbut i really, can't, see any advantages of Firefox over IE
2) extension (isn't that nice, that FF can check your gmial account, block ads, allow you to easily show 'debug-info' of your web-page and do much more stuff?
3) mouse gestures - is it possible to have them in IE? I can't use IE because of lack of them...
I wouldn't stand wasting so much time on sth. what shouldn't be needed...i do a spyware check every week
I understand the firewall, but I can't understand the idea of anti-virus stuff made by MS. Wouldn't it be better to fix bugs than to make software that don't allow to exploit them?lizardkid wrote:Windows has plenty of security! SP2 comes with all the firewall virus scan etc...
Well Liz. It is not that there evil, it is that some of their software causes headaches. IE for instance. MS, has made it big in this world and has helped us tremendously. It has improved lives of everyday people.
But there comes a point where you have to look at the company and think, is wasting $99 on a OS that has bugs any good while I can get faster processing AND less buggy programs for FREE from Linux distro's?
It realy depends on your taste. If you want a PC just to run internet and a typing program, the $499 new apple pc is right for you. If you want gaming, windows PC is good for you, if you are an engineer or a physysict(sp?) you need linux/unix for your work.
