.Map - the future ?
Hi guys,
Just wanted a little feedback on the direction this site (and the CoD one) should take......
I feel that we are out growing the Gamespy network and we need to either (1) Find someone else to host - we have offers) or
(2) Get our own domain / hosting
There are of course up and downsides to both, the major one for option 2 is funding...but with our own domain etc we can start to offer our members more - such as their own webpages - ie each mapper gets a small amount of webspace to use as their own, to host maps, etc...
Anyway i'd like to hear people thoughts and suggestions on this

i see definite reasons for looking for a new host, we're not obligated to discard Gamespy if we jsut search around.
1. Gamespy's cut-outs (as stated above)
2. a nicer link
3. webpages so all our members with pages that want to (like Wacko's Recycling Bin) can move in.
4. lower costs (?)
as to what kind of servers/domains we can have, lets see some figures. what are we (i use that loosley) paying now? who has offered servers/domains and how much are they? bandwidth? space?
if everyone likes the idea i'll help look around for servers

Gamespy
I don't see why you wana move it. This server is nice, when it is working, and there are no ads--on the forum pages anyway. Who's to say a paid server would be more reliable? They breakdown too, and can have similar problems with support.

www.dotmap.com is hogged by another one of those "buy up domains and sell/rent them for huge amounts of money" ( Damn I hate those, almost as much as spammers ).
And I quote the price range:
I dont think a pay model will work. But perhaps the ability do donate would be used.
@Surgeon:
Supplying a limited space to users would probably result in a considerable amount of disk space needed... is this something our "so far unmentioned possible future hosters" are willing to provide?
And I quote the price range:
As I see it, moving the site must provide equal or larger benafits than the problems/work needed to move it.The quoted price will be at least $1,000 and may be over $10,000. Due to the high demand of premium domain names, the prices are rising weekly and subject to change.

Well those kind of A**holes should be shot but that price is what a 1 time cost ? If you want I will throw in the first $50 right now . What about a longer name like www.dotmap.gamers.com or some other name if it is not taken it would be cheaper right ? Anyway I like the idea of a upload area and maybe you can provide some web space at a small cost to those who need it or an uplaod fee maybe . What about makeing a CD of some of the best of .map maps I am sure some of the guys would give you permission to use thier maps for the cause .

Yeah i've done some research into the domain name, and dotmap.org did catch my eye - for really professional webhosting we're talking about ?35 - ? 45 a year, and thats for a reliable host which gives us unlimited space and unlimited bandwidth ..... plus a free domain name and 10 sub domain names (ie www.cod.dotmap.org, www.moh.dotmap.org) I'm sure there's cheaper around but I was just curious as to a ball park figure - i mean thats 50 people donating ?1 ($2) a year ....
And yes there is no guaruntee that they would be more reliable than gamespy - but we wouldn't have to put up with Fileplanet anymore - which a lot of people have a problem with ...

It would be nice to have acces to everything within a .map network: maps download, an interactive section for tutorials (like the rjukan site), etc. And a small contribution, i'm sure many members would donate, i would.
My question is: is there a hosting company that will offer unlimited space/bandwidth?
I look around and many advertise for such but in fact, all plans have limits. If there is too much traffic, the client have to take new arrangements with them.
Godaddy has some good hosting though, and cheap domain registering too, maybe it's interesting for .map:

edit: i forgot, about letting users upload stuff, since pure unlimited is more an advertising catch, maybe it could be restricted to contributing members, just a thought. I've seen this on another not game-related forum, contributing members can upload their sigs and pictures to put in posts.

Try PC Frog
I know the owner in person, he may give you a good deal. He gave me nine dollars a year for webhosting and a free domain with every package.
www.pcfrog.com

P.S, why don't you start a poll for the members to help decide.
