Well, what ever you all decide... Sign me up for $10.00 a year and I'll see what I can do up front when you're ready to do what you guys do.

I do like the idea of downloading files directly from the site.
I once was lost, but now........... I'm still lost!

I would definitely be happy to have a central location for downloads. I spent this weekend at Wacko's Recycle bin downloading a bunch of stuff to sniff around in. Took forever because I had to wait in line for everything at Fileplanet.

Hosting mapping related websites for individuals that donate would be a plus.

Perhaps if you do move to your own domain, you could set up a paypal account for us to donate to.

File submission should be like groundforce1.com's used to be (before file submission was shut down). Each member could submit a mod, but a moderator would have to approve (or dissaprove, if he wanted) before it would be entered into the database.

This would prevent spamming database w/ junk, taking up space.

long time no see amigos

two comments.

my clan uses a donate via paypal service, and does get alot of donations from clan members and others who enjoy our server... I dont know how much month to month, but I know this month it was more then enough to cover the server cost... This is with 118 registered forum users, compared to the 10k+ here. Granted, it is a different service being provided, but this site offers tons in the way of service. Many are the beginning to intermediate mappers who have showed up here and had thier prayers to the radiant gods answered... and a good number of them are adults(ie people with income) if even a small percentage of those put up a donation, Id think(and this is just a guess of course, no market research or anything behind me!) youd be pretty good to go.

The majority of people who visit any site, will not donate to it, no matter what they use it for, or what perks are offered, but usualy it only takes a minority to keep things reasonable. Course thats jsut my opinion, and im not really argueing for a private server, just commenting =)

Secondly, in the case of rented soace compared to hosted space, thier is much more incentive for the company to respond prompty to issues concerning thier cash flow. There is competition, and most people dont hesitate to dump a provider they are not satisfied with if they have heard something good about another. You cant guarantee that a company wont have major issues with thier servers, and thus leave you in limbo, but the odds are higher that they will at least do thier best to stay in communication, and keep thier customers from becoming ex- customers.

I dont really know about the hosting stuff, id guess if you have a lot of traffic the company would like to keep you around, but I cant see the incentive to worry about your needs being nearly as high.

personaly, if this site had downloadable maps on site, it would be the only place I went to look.

I agree with the donations idea but you should make that optional. I think it would be a bad idea to force it on people to pay to stay here. However I think people are happy with .Maps service and tutorials and I would bet most of us would donate. Redirecting people to the new site wouldn't be a problem either.

I dont think anybody is suggesting a "must contribute" ideal hammer, of course it would be an optional contribution.
I like many im sure have found the down times of this site extremely frustrating especialy when I was trying to learn off of the many valuable tutorials, however I would be pleased to see .map change servers and would finacialy support any decision you may take.
I may be in touch with a free solution Surgeon.

Yes paying would have to be voluntary . I think the .map community would do what was nessesary to keep this site alive for as long as possible . I am sure the regulars would be glad to donate some of thier lunch money to such a worthy cause . I like the idea of a paypal service that makes things easy . And the idea of renting space for a personal page is a good idea as well if the admins don't mind administering it .

well its annually so its not like you would need a bunch of donations to get the host, At the most ur looking at is $100 U.S a year.
then the donations through the year will help with other events such as prizes for mapping contest, maybe a small server.
mohaa servers are starting to get cheap.theres enough regulars here to were if jus the regulars donated $5 a piece, That would pay for the hosting.
i would be willing to donate, Im sure alot others would to.
especially i learned everything i know about scripting and mapping from this community.Check out my post count on Modding Theater, I just started posting there, I barely even visit there.
and for all this free info, I would be honored to donate

Ok, so it looks like there are enough people willing to donate money to make this idea workable ..... If this does go ahead i want to try and make this really worthwhile for everyone involved...

With that in mind is there any other ideas people have about things we can do once this "site" is up and running. I really like the idea of giving people their own piece of the site......

I would be happy to donate to the cause, just let us know how much and how to get it to you.

I can help out on little bits, I am working such stupid hours recently, I can knock up a few buttons, banners or maybe some little animations.

I would love to get involved with maybe redesigning some of it but I really couldnt take responsibility right now, though I could work with a few of the other guys here on it.

The Spartan ephors sent back a one word reply: "If".

I would really love to donate, .map is a great community with the best resources for modders of the MoH and CoD series i've ever seen. I have no doubt it will continue into more WW2 FPS games as well and stay alive.

But, i'm off for a very expensive college in a couple years, ( www.uat.edu ) and i need to get money, so i can't. But I'll help however else i can with the transition when the site comes along.
