Aw yeah, most English natives (esp. US) expect everybody else to speak their language...
We have to learn another lanuage very soon ('bout in third grade nowadays, I think) as I live in country with four official languages... :D

Arizona and California are voting on having two official languages, Spanish (for the illegals) and English (for the taxpayers)

Well, literacy in the US and Britain are just... terrible. Anyone i know my age can't spell half the words or understand that jsut because it isn't in a dictionary doesnt mean it isn't a word. suffixes and prefixes are powerful things. Most people don't think reading or writing well is cool :'(

what did you expect? the US isn't exactly outward-oriented. The news focuses on US (and some allies), kids are brainwashed from the beginning US is t3h 1337 country, and nobody cares about other countries.

Yeah but come on... This shouldn't really keep you off learning other languages! Okay, I know that nobody really cares about my country (Switzerland - just go and have a look at the disrespect poll!) - we have to learn at least (!) three languages at school (which is French, German or Italian and English). Most kids even learn a fourth language later...
Isn't it ignorant to be the most powerful country in the world and to just not care about anything else... ?

Yup, but since they are the most powerful country; they don't care.

Flag waving morons come to mind

England I think would be the same, if it wasn't for our heritage, that we once ruled over a large proportion of the world - and therefore we are pompous and believe we still rule the world, and the world being part of England, we respect it, lol :P

Lmao! I never heard it that way... If course I knew that we (Switzerland) are of course part of England too as Europe is part of it [England, I mean] :D
At least I know that you know Mj where in what country I live and that I don't speak Swedish :D  (so, that's one thing you know you know... )

people always find other languages interesting but soon loose interest after a year of bad teaching. We start learnign them too late anyway. everything anywhere is in english. im sure if we had constant radio and tv in non english and films and books and everything in nonenglish people would pick up the language naturaly and just want to know it more. Thus after school they might carry on learning.

whenever people go to another country im sure they at first try and say a few words cos its fun:D. But they soon realise they are unable to say it and the other language person knows english anyway.

I dont see how people find the time anyway. when do u sit down and actualy study another language? most epople i know just use the internet so much where most are english.

i put what sites i can in other languages just for fun. im pretty sure i know what all them words mean if i saw them even know i dont stop to think about what they are.

Oh yeah, that's bad... Come on, Elgan, say something in German, I'm sure you didn't forget everything
I had time to learn other languages 'cause I had to at school. I'm using French and (of course :D ) English very often so I don't forget too much.
And now I'm studying Russian at university (we have a very strict and very good teacher!).

Apart from actually studying it, I learn it most efficiently by reading books and watching movies (I'm very glad that DVDs are sooooooo cheap in Russia :D )

I had Spanish lessons too at highschool, but the teacher and esp. the class were quite, well, not very cool, so I didn't like learning Spanish back then - but actually I like Spanish and I hope I'm gonna learn it some time... :)
