OK, its "digging up an old thread day"
I got to try the E-D Glasses today as my school (
http://www.gamemaker.nu/ ) just bought 2 pairs.
It works, and it is a really lively effect. Your monitor gets depth when rendering 3D in fullscreen.
So yes, it works and it is no hoax
It works by making the GFX card render from 2 alternating viewpoints in the 3D space, and then the glasses alternetly blacks out one of your eyes with the glasses.
But now comes the downsides:
- As it renders 2 images to create one image in your brain, the percieved FPS is in effect half of what you will see. And in addition about 15% FPS decrease is introduced to aminister the specialized rendering. So if you have a 100fps game, it will run at just above 40fps with these galasses.
- This FPS impact is totally OK for games where you dont make sudden fast camera movements. Racing games and air simulators work very nice.
- This FPS impact is totally
NOT OK for games where you
do make sudden fast camera movements. First person shooters like MOHAA is an example of this. It looks really nice and 3D, but as soon as you do a fast mouse movement: your brain starts to scream in pain. Still looks 3D and very cool, but it just isent an enjoyable experience any more.
- The "flat" controls in the game will appear to float on top of everything. This is OK and even a good thing for stuff like a compass, but it can be very confusing when it comes to the crosshair. As everything is now in full amazing 3D: it will be painfully obvious that the sight is rendered behing the actual gun

. The aim will still be true, but if feels a bit strange. On the other hand: games with crosshairs that is really rendered on the target ( like the red laser dot from the HL2 rocket launcher ) will REALLY be rendered on the target

.
In conclusion: If you have loots of money and lover racing games, or want your sims to be even more alive: go ahead and buy one.
But if you are even thinking of using it for FPS games: forget it.
( but if you just want to impress your friends: buy it, because it is a great "look what I've got"-gadget

).
Note: It only works in fullscreen mode. So if you want to do modeling in Maya/Max/Blender and so on, its a no-go.
