Map in progress: Manor (56k warning)

Post by blue60007 »

First off, how is everyone? I don't know if any of you remember me, but I used to be a regular member a while back. Then I got involved with Blueprint Games and that and school work tied up my time, so I left and I haven't been around much (I came once during the time that the .map forums got screwed up). Currently I am the Web Team Lead, or sometimes called the Webmaster at BPG. Believe it or not, BPG has it's roots here at .Map. But then it was called .MMT and then .MDT. It all started right here, with Yarik. The following are the remain original members:

madmapper, blue60007, at0mic, simpleone, yarik, and M&M

Any way if you haven't checked out Blueprint Games in a while you should! Anywho, enough advertising, and on the my real purpose of speaking today.

In the past I have started numerous maps, but never actually finished one. Well I'm going to attempt that feat! I have started a small map called Manor, it is a small map that features a large Manor type building in the center connected to numerous underground bunkers. Bascially this are has been modified for war. This is a fictional map.

Before I start showing the preliminary pictures, note that I haven't done anything in the way of lighting, other than throwing in ambient light, and don't pay attention to the frame rate, I haven't done any optimization, everything is being drawn.

OK on with the pictures:

Well that's all for now. As always suggestions are welcome!

Looking good mate, It'll look good with lights!

Maybe add some crossbeams in the dining area, and change some of the railings from hearthset to a nice wood :)

Hey that looks sweet!
One remark: the walls in the house look somewhat boring - well, the whole atmosphere in it is kinda stiff... Maybe you could put some, I dunno, plants in it; or some bigger paintings...
The outsides look great and quite natural; I like it a lot!

I agree looks good but needs the right lighting and some of the textures arn't what I would use . I am suprised with so many brushes in your railings that you have not ran into any problems maybe one of the railing textures might have been easier . Maybe scaleing some of the textures as well maybe an idea so they don't look as blury .

Thanks for the replies! I think I'll change the railing texture and cut the frequency of the vertical part of the railings in half (delete every other one). Yeah the walls are a bit boring, haven't had a chance to decerate the walls much.

Textures:

I agree with scaling down the textures and choosing some different ones for variety. I don't think wall decoration (like pictures) is the issue as much as the use of that same white texture on all the walls. Oh, and you are using that same small black metal texture on all your beams in the bunkers. There are some steel girder textures that would work a lot better. They are also a warmer color and will match your tan concrete walls better. But these are comments your bound to get when submitting WIP.

Kudos for the architecture. When you get the directional light in, it will really bring out the details.

2 construction suggestions:

The shack -
The wooden walls on either side of this building are built to follow the hills of the terrain. That is fine, but the support posts would not be angled, they would be straight in the ground. So it looks a little odd.

The Conference room -
This is just a personal preference, but your ceiling height looks really low. When the ceiling starts touching the top of the doorways, it gets a bit claustrophobic for me.

A Lighting suggestion for later:

I'm not too partial to the dull cloudy skymaps. You see these all the time. By necessity, you won't be able to have strong contrasting shadows that will really make your structures stand out. A nightime sky with a very bright moon would look nice though. And that will make your interior lighting stand out even more when you are finished.

Hey good to see you guys around, at0mic and lizard. :)

Gracias, diego. I didn't think about the girder texture, that will be much better especially since it'll boost FPS. I see what your saying about the fence posts by the shack, it does look a bit peculiar. Yeah my ambient light/sunlight or whatever I decide to do, still needs work. I can't decide between bright moonlight night, or an overcast day (using sunlight). Yeah my walls still need decorating and stuff, I might use one of those textures with the chair rail on it. But as you said this is still WIP.
