Oak tree shadow

Post by diego »

I made a test render of my map with static shadows turned on. My large oak trees cast really bad shadows. It is basically a square for the foliage with a stick shadow for the trunk. Like this:

Anyone know why this shadow looks like crap and my other trees are ok?

The quality/complexity of the shadows is set in your game under advanced options.

Another way is to leave static shadows off and use "common/caulk shadow" textured brushes to cast the shadows.

Ok, I know this should be coming from Imperfection, but as I am his tree-supplier I may as well talk away...

The custom trees in the rainforest map are completely made in rad - and the effect is gained by alphashadow on a low lightmapdensity surface.

Soo.. you may have to extract the oaks textures and make your own oak in rad :)

I hadn't noticed that alpha shadow parameter before. Is that parameter applied to the ground surface you want the shadow cast on? or does it go on the the foliage surface? If it is applied to the tree texture, I'm not exactly certain where to find the shaders for static objects.

The wierd thing with the oak tree is that none of my other static trees cast shadows like that. They don't cast detailed alpha shadows like Imperfection's, but they are not blocky either. I'm wondering if maybe an alpha texture for that tree is missing or broken. In radient, the oak tree has a flat gray opaque plane that could be where a shadow texture goes.

I'm not sure If I would know how to build a tree in radient. I don't want funky rainforest trees.. :)

Do you think I could get a sample tree from you with the correct shader parameters to study? I'd like to try to make the static obs work first before attempting to build something in radient. But I can really use this technique on a lot of different alpha surfaces like railings and fences.

EDIT:
I checked out my oak tree. There is nothing wrong with it. That gray plane does have the oak tree shadow texture on it. I'm going through all the files related to creating the trees to try to understand the setup better.
